Usp Supplement Brands
I know that tablet based supplements don't always dissolve completely for body to absorb, but what about capsules? Are all capsules USP by default?
Depends: Not all capsules are usp. If you go to the health food store you can buy/find empty capsules that you could stuff with something like an herb or a powder. This capsule you made will not undergo vigorous scientific testing or pass all the requirements. You will not be able to figure out exactly how your body will absorb it. So the message is read the fine print on whatever tablet/capsule you take. ...Read more
A dietary supplement, also known as food supplement or nutritional supplement, is a preparation intended to supplement the diet and provide nutrients, such as vitamins, minerals, fiber, fatty acids, or amino acids, that may be missing or may not be consumed in sufficient quantities in a person's diet. Some countries define dietary supplements as foods, while ...Read more
I purchased a multi-vitamin from the grocery store and noticed that it didn't have a USP certification. I know vitamins and supplements aren't regulated by the FDA. What are the possible risks associated with taking an uncertified multi-vitamin supplement
Depends on the sourc: If from reliable company, ought to be OK. If from another country, have to consider contamination w/ heavy metals, unlisted ingredients, no active med in it. Even those in drug store have been found not to have any of what's on the label. If uncertain, ask pharmacist in store to advise you, or your doc can recommend a reliable brand. ...Read more
Hard to tell: Isotonix has many products, and since they are not medications approved by the fda, isotonix products are probably not tested for effects and side effects like real medicines are. That means nobody really knows what effects they have, and how accurate their dosing is, and how true or false their claims are. If it is a large, national brand, their products' quality control might be adequate. ...Read more

Do multivitamin supplements really help? . Do young adults 25-30 yrs really need them? What brand (s) are recommended?
Uncertain quality: If you want the best acting, there is no regulation in this arena and few supplements have been tested. If you can find supplements made by a major pharmaceutical company like bausch and lomb, then they will have been tested for content and quality. Supplements in 'health food stores' are a random selection and the contents may not be the same as listed on the label. ...Read more

I have a walmart brand natural supplement for metabolism support that just expired 06/2013. Is it safe to take?
Probably: Expiration dates on both drugs and supplements tend to be rather arbitrary and most of these are probably still safe to take a year or longer past the expiration date. Over time they may lose some of their potency but it is unlikely taking them would do any harm. A supplement just a few months past expiration is likely perfectly fine. ...Read more
Is life seasons brand Anxie-T supplement safe and would it be a good natural alternative to a daily anxiety drug?
No, BUT: If your anxiety is at clinical levels this supplement is not FDA approved. Supplements like this are not well regulated and it is hard to be sure what they say is in them really is. If you try them, and they work for you as you want, great, but you would be better off seeing a therapist and working out your issues. Anxiety can be treated. ...Read more
Is it better to take a daily multivitamin, or to take juiceplus brand supplements (anyone familiar with these?)? Or perhaps it's best to take both?
Both helpful: Studies have supported the benefits of taking a multivitamin a day. Taking too many separate vitamins, without any vitamin deficiency, may cause hypervitaminosis syndrome, which may lead to adverse effects. Vitamins, usually do not increase energy. Combining a healthy diet and 1 pill of a multivitamin per day is fine. Thanks. ...Read more
