I was prescribed mupirocin 2% for a hole above my anus but the tube is almost gone. Can I use neosporin? I've heard they're pretty much the same
No but: Depends on the bacteria causing the infection. If mupirocin has not worked after a whole tube has been used, there is no harm in trying neosporin which is more effective on organisms other than staph. On the other hand, you also need to find out if there is a fistula (channel) between rectum and the skin near the anus when the problem is persistent. Thus a protology consult may be needed. ...Read more

A friend keeps getting boils one after another in different areas. He's had antibiotics each time & used bactroban (mupirocin) for 3days. Why? What else can he do?
Culture: Find out what type of bacteria he is colonized with by nasal and lesion culture to best determine which antibiotic (s) to use. Hibiclens when showering, topical bactroban to the lesions and a course of nasal bactroban (in addition to the baths with bleach noted above) might be useful. I would also culture and decolonize close contacts with hibiclens and nasal bactroban is helpful to prevent spread. ...Read more

I visited a doctor and was prescribed paracetamol, antibiotic and mupirocin oitment. Will it help in curing boil? Is there anything else I can do? It pains and at times very hard!
Heat and drain maybe: Frequently a boil might need to be drained with a simple incision. Antibiotics will not penetrate the area of puss collection well. It looks like this was not your case at the time. Possibly the treatment you have now will take care of it. Also applying warm compress over it may help it also. There are other"home remedies"described"out there' but none that for sure work as far as I know. ...Read more

Poss. Anal fistula:
Your history suggests that you may have an anal fistula which is an infection in an anal gland which first appears as a 'boil' and then continues to drain. Keeping it clean is important, but you do need to see a specialist.
If you have an anal fistula, you would need an operation - simple, day surgery. It doesn't sound serious, but you should see a doctor who can make a diagnose.

Perianal abscess: You are describing a perianal abscess and anorectal fistula. An infection of one of the anal "crypts" or glands that circle the anus can work its way to the perianal skin where it forms an access that eventually drains to the outside. This can result in a "fistula" or passage way between the inside of the anus and the surrounding skin> recurrent boils. See> http://wb. Md/1l6AWX1 ...Read more

I have a painful boil in my anus... I tired to pop it I felt it pop but nothing came out because of all the skin. ... What should I do?
Surgeon/dermatologis: You need a surgeon (a general surgeon or preferably a colorectal surgeon) or a dermatologist to I&D (incise and drain) the boil. Boils are actually abscesses, which means they are walled-off infections. The pus, or bacteria-filled fluid, inside of them must be drained out, and the skin must then heal from the inside out. Squeezing it will only push some pus further in, which will make it worse. ...Read more
