Using Laxatives Once A Week
Ever since I have been on a diet, I have had problems with bowel movements. Is it safe to take laxatives once a week? Also, my husband has kidney failure. He is doing peritoneal dialysis at home. How long can he live on dialysis before he has to have a
Really not good idea: If you repeatedly take laxatives, I assume you feel very constipated or are looking to "cleanse." if the latter, please reconsider & check out numerous healthtap answers that point to problems with colon cleansers--don't use them! If constipation is new, has significantly worsened, is accompanied by distension, vomiting, fever, pain, esp. If "colitis" (inflamed colon) is present, see doctor. ...Read more

Is taking laxatives safe while only 1 week pregnant? I don't know for sure if I'm pregnant but there's a big possibility.
What will happen if I start giving my kids a laxative once a week ages 3-7 and weight is 46 lbs to 60 lbs they are not constipated but a family member?
No to laxatives: Do not use a laxative if your children are not constipated. They have a normal stooling pattern if they are pooping every one to two days. Use of a laxative may result in loose stools if they are not constipated. Instead make sure they are eating fruits and vegetables, whole grains and drink water. ...Read more
See your doctor.: If this has been going on for weeks and the over-the-counter remedies that you have tried have not been effective, your best bet is to see your doctor or a gastroenterologist. At age 51, if you have not had a colonoscopy yet, you should have that done anyway. Good luck. ...Read more
I have chronic constipation (sometimes I go every 4 days to a week) I want to know what laxative is safe to take on a regular basis?
Unable to have full bm, tried laxatives for a few days. Very gassy and bloated but still can't go. Almost been a week. What should I do.
Constipation: Try to hydrate yourself well. Suggest high fiber diet with fiber supplement (otc, either citrucel or fibercon). If the above is not adequate for your bowel movement, you can try MiraLAX (polyethylene glycol) (otc, one tablespoon in 8 oz of water once to twice a day). If constipation is chronic/recurrent, you might want to work closely with a GI doctor to regulate your bm better. ...Read more

I have been using 5-HTP for six weeks, and I have developed terrible constipation. Without laxatives I am unable to do anything. How to treat it?
Diet: Any constipation can be treated in many ways. I typically recommend enacting dietary measures such as increasing dietary fiber and decreasing fat. For example, green leafy vegetables and beans are good sources of fiber that may permit stool to be passed. Increasing water and some light exercise is a treatment with little side effect. Exercise is a default therapy for almost any condition. ...Read more

Apparent colon blockage for the last 2 1/2 weeks. Er tried an enama & laxative last friday, didn't work. What now?
Is there REAL block?: The key word is "apparent." the colon may not be squeezing normally, from: nearby inflammation, virus infection, poor nervous system communication from/to brain/gut, diabetes, low thyroid, lack of water and fiber, low roughage diet, lack of exercise. .. Etc. True blockages come from scarring, tumors, cancers, pressure from outside the colon, kinking. Colonoscopy by a good dr. Needed. Good luck. ...Read more

Chronic constipation: For how long? Opioids / anticholinergics? Drink 2.5 -3 liters /day, combo of water /gatorade. Juice? Also 1-2 glassesf prune juice /day Consider Sitz study where they have you swallow markers and over 5 days see how many you release in stool, if few are released it means the bowel is moving too slow. I'm 20. previously for a few months I took laxatives. I took quite alot but have stopped for maybe a few weeks? But no period for four months pls help
See your doctor.: There are many potential reasons that you have missed your period for four months. First, you should be checked for pregnancy. If you are not pregnant, then you need a check up to help determine why you're not having periods. It is not likely that it is related to your laxative intake. I would not resume the laxatives, but I would see your doctor to get checked out. Good luck. ...Read more

Hi im 20. Previously I took alot of laxatives for months. I took 3 to 4 tablets every three days I stopped few weeks ago as I knew it was bad for me. I haven't had my period for 4cmonths. Please help?
Not sure.: Not sure I understand your question. It is possible to miss your period for 4 months related to stress, diet, sleep, exercise, or pregnancy. Probably not related to laxative use unless you were taking them to lose weight rather than for constipation. If that is the case your absent periods will return when you eat normally. If you have eating disorder please see someone for long term help ...Read more

Obstipation: If you have a strong urge to have a bowel movement but can't and, especially if you're having cramps, don't take more laxatives but instead you have to work from below using glycerin rectal suppository, or dulcolax rectal suppository or a fleets enema.
