Please advise if it's okay to take a laxative every other week?

Please advise if it's okay to take a laxative every other week?

Really not good idea: If you repeatedly take laxatives, I assume you feel very constipated or are looking to "cleanse." if the latter, please reconsider & check out numerous healthtap answers that point to problems with colon cleansers--don't use them! If constipation is new, has significantly worsened, is accompanied by distension, vomiting, fever, pain, esp. If "colitis" (inflamed colon) is present, see doctor.

I've taken over 50 laxatives the past two weeks, this is the third week (almost) and I was just wondering if it's going to do serious damage?

See doctor: The amount of laxative use described is far more than would be considered proper. Please see your doctor to discuss why you would need laxatives and how to stop taking.

Is taking laxatives safe while only 1 week pregnant? I don't know for sure if I'm pregnant but there's a big possibility.

Take a test: If you think you might be pregnant check then check a home pregnancy test. They are cheap, reliable and available at any pharmacy. Laxatives are safe for occasional use for constipation.

What will happen if I start giving my kids a laxative once a week ages 3-7 and weight is 46 lbs to 60 lbs they are not constipated but a family member?

What will happen if I start giving my kids a laxative once a week ages 3-7 and weight is 46 lbs to 60 lbs they are not constipated but a family member?

No to laxatives: Do not use a laxative if your children are not constipated. They have a normal stooling pattern if they are pooping every one to two days. Use of a laxative may result in loose stools if they are not constipated. Instead make sure they are eating fruits and vegetables, whole grains and drink water.

Try tapering: Try taking it every other day for a week, then every 3rd for a week, then every 4th and so on until you just stop. This should limit any extra stress on your system as you get off them.

Bloated and constipated for a few weeks already. Laxatives no longer effective, what to do?

See your doctor.: If this has been going on for weeks and the over-the-counter remedies that you have tried have not been effective, your best bet is to see your doctor or a gastroenterologist. At age 51, if you have not had a colonoscopy yet, you should have that done anyway. Good luck.

I have chronic constipation (sometimes I go every 4 days to a week) I want to know what laxative is safe to take on a regular basis?

That history of constipation: It is a serious indictment on your diet. Think seriously about fruit and vegetables as the major component. Maybe a regular dose of mineral oil would help.

Unable to have full bm, tried laxatives for a few days. Very gassy and bloated but still can't go. Almost been a week. What should I do.

Constipation: Try to hydrate yourself well. Suggest high fiber diet with fiber supplement (otc, either citrucel or fibercon). If the above is not adequate for your bowel movement, you can try MiraLAX (polyethylene glycol) (otc, one tablespoon in 8 oz of water once to twice a day). If constipation is chronic/recurrent, you might want to work closely with a GI doctor to regulate your bm better.

See a GI doctor: Any change in bowel habits especially in an older person warrants closer examination. If your grandma hasn't passes poop or gas in over 3 days she may be obstructed. Go to the er if tho is the case.

Was constipated over a week. After laxative I had two large bm's and then passed a brownish-pink, long string that had bubbles in it. What coul it be?

Constipated: No idea what that could be. Some general recommendations would be to make sure that you have had a recent evaluation of your colon (ie. Colonoscopy) as a change in bowel habits, constipation and a pink tinge could represent something else going on in your colon.

I have been using 5-HTP for six weeks, and I have developed terrible constipation. Without laxatives I am unable to do anything. How to treat it?

I have been using 5-HTP for six weeks, and I have developed terrible constipation. Without laxatives I am unable to do anything. How to treat it?

Diet: Any constipation can be treated in many ways. I typically recommend enacting dietary measures such as increasing dietary fiber and decreasing fat. For example, green leafy vegetables and beans are good sources of fiber that may permit stool to be passed. Increasing water and some light exercise is a treatment with little side effect. Exercise is a default therapy for almost any condition.

My husband been having fissure since week ago and it not getting better he is in constant pain he is using anusol cream, laxative all not helping???

Anal fissure: This is painful. I would add some viscous lidocaine to the treatment and this will reduce the pain. Probably will need something surgical done if he is not getting better.

Apparent colon blockage for the last 2 1/2 weeks. Er tried an enama & laxative last friday, didn't work. What now?

Apparent colon blockage for the last 2 1/2 weeks. Er tried an enama & laxative last friday, didn't work. What now?

Is there REAL block?: The key word is "apparent." the colon may not be squeezing normally, from: nearby inflammation, virus infection, poor nervous system communication from/to brain/gut, diabetes, low thyroid, lack of water and fiber, low roughage diet, lack of exercise. .. Etc. True blockages come from scarring, tumors, cancers, pressure from outside the colon, kinking. Colonoscopy by a good dr. Needed. Good luck.

Diet modification: You child may be eating too much diary products limit her milk to 16-20 ounces. Add fruits and vegetables to diet as well as high fiber cereals. Dosage of little tummies is usually on the box.
