Daily use of Benadryl (diphenhydramine) for sleep aid on a 16 month old. Are there long term side effects?
Nothing major: Benadryl can alter the sleep pattern some with diminished time in deep (recuperative) sleep stage. I would never consider chronic use in an infant. I would encourage you to write down all your prior sleep related efforts along with what happens at bedtime. Bring this in to discuss with the kids doc. ...Read more
I'm 18 male, and I've been taking two to three 25mg Benadryl (diphenhydramine) tablets 3-4 nights a week for the past few months, do I need prescription sleep aid?
Most definitely: ...Esp. If you tend to suffer from other "atopic" problems such as seasonal allergies, hayfever, congestion, eczema, mild asthma, sensitive stomach, itching, frequent headaches late in the day, etc. Did you have tonsils removed, frequent ear infections as a child, or recurrent sinus problems? Then very likely it will help you. Those are very likely related the the reasons you can't get to sleep. ...Read more
Is it safe for an 11 year old who weighs 81lbs to take Benadryl (diphenhydramine) and melatonin every night as a sleep aid together?
Yes and no: The answer to your question is yes it is safe. The next question that comes to my mind though, is why she needs a sleep aid every night at age 11. If she has a type of sleep initiation disorder, have behavioral interventions with her bedtime routine been tried, including no computer or LED screen time for two hours prior to bed? Will meditation and relaxation techniques help rather than chronic med ...Read more
I took NyQuil about 1.5 hours ago and I still feel terrible and cannot sleep. Can I take Benadryl (diphenhydramine)? If not, can I take an over the counter sleep aid?
Same thing: They all contain Benadryl (diphenhydramine) (or similar) and thus taking another brand is likely doubling up. It probably won't hurt but may or may work either. If this is a persistent problem, then you need to have better sleeping habits (avoid bright light in the evening, no caffeine after noon, no vigorous exercise near bedtime etc). ...Read more

Would 2 pills of tylenol, (acetaminophen) 1 tramadol, 2 advil, 1 oxycodone, 4 benadryl, 3 midnite sleep aid and 2 melatonin be bad or just put me to sleep for awhile?
YES - DANGEROUS!: This is way too much medication to take all at once, and could put you in grave danger - including potential liver/kidney damage, or worse - death. If you are having trouble sleeping, then talk to your doctor about this, and they can work on establishing an effective treatment plan. Work on your stress factors. Eliminate caffeinated beverages before bed. Best wishes. ...Read more
Actually how long does 250mg of diphenhydramine sleep aid stay in system? . I'm 36 year old 200 lbs male, thanks!
Melatonin: My first suggestion is to practice good sleep hygiene -- keep your sleep structured, use bed for sleep and intimacy only, avoid lying in bed long periods, avoid day time napping. Melatonin is a naturally occurring hormone and over-the-counter supplement that can help improve sleep if taken at bedtime. It is not, and does not contain diphenhydramine. Give yourself 6-8 hours to sleep. Good luck! ...Read more

OTC sleep agents:
Common OTC sleep aids include Chamomile tea, 5-HTP, Melatonin and Valerian Root. Sleep enhancing foods include warm milk, turkey, cherries, oatmeal, bananas, wine and others.
You can become accustomed to the effects of things like Benadryl (diphenhydramine) and other drugs so they will no longer work but the tea and Valerian root don't seem to do that.
Is it okay for me to take 2 50mg diphenhydramine dollar general sleep aid to sleep instead of just one?
The tablet is 25 mg: The tablet you buy over the counter is 25 mg so if you want to take two of them that will be 50 mg and it is OK to do that the only way to get 50 mg benadryl (diphenhydramine) tablet is via prescription so try two tablet of 25 and see if will help you sleep or not if you want to take total of 100 mg once to try that is ok but do not make it as habit ...Read more
I'm on drug court and I want to take a sleep aid because I can't sleep I have a generic sleep aid but it has diphenhydramine hci in it will this make me test positive for anything or will it be ok to take it
The answer dr. Johnson provided is correct. There are reports that with very high doses, Diphenhydramine has in rare cases, led to false positive drug screening for benzodiazapines. However, if this were to occur, normally the sample would be retested using a more precise test and that would clear up the confusion. It is reported that it could also trigger a false positive for pcp (but this is also very rare).
Diphenhydramine is not a good choice for chronic problems with sleep. If you are in a program that requires drug testing, you might consider skipping the Diphenhydramine and working on sleep hygiene first. ...Read more
Recently started taking 1 pill of Diphenhydramine (50mg) as a sleep aid. Is it normal for this type of pill to cause itching?
Benadryl (diphenhydramine) and Itching: Greetings. We often times recommend this medication as a treatment for patients who have itching. As you described, it does provide sedation which adds as a sleeping aid. As any medication, one could be sensitive to this medication and become allergic. It may be worth trying a different OTC sleep medication that does not have Diphenhydramine. Review this with your Pharmacist for confirmation. ...Read more
How long would alcohol stay in your system? How long would I have to wait until I could take diphenhydramine as a sleep aid after my last drink?
Depends: Alcohol elimination depends on various factors including concomitant food consumption, other comorbidities, etc. Diphenhydramine is another sedating drug and isn't recommended to be taken with alcohol. Both commonly used: Both of these are commonly used over-the-counter. They are sedating and help people fall and stay asleep to a greater or lesser degree depending on the person. Often tolerance develops if the person takes one or the other regularly. Melatonin is another otc medication that can help with sleep. Be sure to practice sleep hygiene -- structuring your sleep, avoid lying long periods not sleeping, etc. ...Read more
What to do if every time I take a sleep aid with diphenhydramine in it, I have extremely vivid dreams?
I took drug test today and it was positive for tca, I regularly take an OTC sleep aid with diphenhydramine. Couldn't have caused the false positive?
"tca"????: Did you mean THC (marijuana or cannabis)? TCA medically usually means tricyclic antidepressant, and these are actually chemically similar to benadryl (diphenhydramine). If all that was done was a SCREENING test, there are lots of potential false positives, and if used for legal purposes, all screening tests should be confirmed with a more sophisticated test, usually gas chromatography/mass spectroscopy. ...Read more

Can you take a night time sleep-aid diphenhydramine with 24 hour zyrtec (cetirizine) equivalent in your system?
Yes, but caution: Zyrtec (cetirizine) is a minimal sedating antihistamine while Diphenhydramine (benadryl) is a first generation antihistamine with significant drowsy side effects. There may be carry over effect from diphenhydramine. Avoid drinking alcohol. Consider another sleep aid if this is a persistent problem. ...Read more
Question?: What is your question? Typically the pm pain relievers contain an antihistamine to promote sleep. But you may be groggy in the morning when you wake up. If you do not need pain relief try to avoid them, too much tylenol (acetaminophen) can have very bad side effects. Also please take only infrequently, never on a continuous basis. If sleeping is a problem, talk to your physician. ...Read more
Never taken antidepressants but tested + for tca. I take prescribed Vyvanse (lisdexamfetamine) & an OTC diphenhydramine sleep aid ONLY. Can either have lead to a false +?
Benadryl (diphenhydramine): If you do not take any tricyclic antidepressants, and have a positive TCA on a toxicology screen, is likely the diphenhydramine that you're taking, which can sometimes give a false positive for TCA. If the Vyvanse (lisdexamfetamine) hinders your nighttime sleep, consider taking melatonin rather than diphenhydramine for long-term use. ...Read more
Have you tried good: sleep hygiene? If you need chronic med - would recommend melatonin over benadryl (diphenhydramine). Retire & rise same time each day. Keep bedroom dark & cool & use only for sex & sleep. Turn off tv. No naps. Exercise regularly but not in late evening. No caffeine for 6 hrs & no alcohol or tobacco w/i 2 hrs of sleep. I take singulair at night and xyzal in the morning. Can I take a sleeping aid at night? Most of the are basically like Benadryl (diphenhydramine) aren't they?
Yes & no: It is the main component (or only component) of most over the counter sleep aids. It can be of benefit to some, but it is in & out of your system in about 4 hours, which may not help you if anxiety is your issue. It has also been shown to lessen the amount of deep restorative sleep achieved. ...Read more
Many do: This is a common ingredient in most over the counter sleep aids.It does make most people groggy, like alcohol. Over the long term it interferes with attaining the deep restorative sleep that we need to function. In short, you get to sleep but not good sleep. I would review the issue with your doc & see if changing some lifestyle or pre-sleep patterns might help you more. ...Read more

Recommendation for good sleep hygiene. I would only suggest Benadryl (diphenhydramine) for very short term use. I tend to recommend melatonin over benadryl (diphenhydramine). Try these sleep tips. 1. Keep a regular bedtime & wakening time (to include weekends). Get up the same time each day, regardless of what time you fell asleep.
2. Make a regular, relaxing bedtime routine. Relaxing rituals prior to bedtime may include a warm >. ...Read more
