Must ask why need it: Although melatonin is quite safe in the recommended doseages and has been used in children as young as 6 months and up. To help with troubled-sleeping issue...Often trouble with falling asleep or jetlag issues etc... I would do is first to find out why the teen needs this-consult doc. Might help: Give these a try to see if they can help your insomnia. They have no side effects and should not be a problem. These are both refined products and are not quite natural any more than white sugar is "not" natural. The definitions of natural are very nebulous and undefined so beware of depending too much on this labeling. Poison ivy is certainly natural, but that does not mean it is not toxic.
I've been experiencing extreme tiredness. Getting on average 7.5 hrs of sleep. Tried melatonin. Has caused to use all vacation and sick time.

Yes, best when: Combined with great sleep hygiene. Retire & rise same time each day. Keep bedroom dark & cool & use only for sex & sleep. Turn off tv. No naps. Exercise regularly but not in late evening. No caffeine for 6 hrs & no alcohol or tobacco w/i 2 hrs of sleep. Keep dinner moderate sized & finish at least 2 to 3 hrs before sleep. Can the night time use of melatonin lead to daytime fatigue? I take it at 7:30pm, go to bed at 9pm and wake at 5am.
Maybe in some people: Some people who used melatonin have complained of daytime sleepiness as a side effect, among some other mild side effects. However, people use melatonin to treat sleep problems and jet lag, which means these people are already having daytime sleepiness or daytime fatigue problems. That makes it hard to figure out. One can try changing the dose and/or the timing of the dose to see what happens.

May help: Quiet bedroom-turn off tv, radio & phone; consider ear plugs; keep temperature cool but comfortable, exercise regularly (not for 3 hours prior to bed). Keep dark! Avoid alcohol, caffeine, large meals or excess fluids before bed. Wear dark sunglasses if driving home in the am and avoid light prior to bed. Melatonin 3 mg prior to bed may help sleep. I'm going to start a clonazepam taper. I take. 5mg in the morning and the same at night. What would be a starting dose of melatonin to use?
Melatonin 5mg: Melatonin is available over the counter in many different dosages. There is no standard dosage, however I usually recommend starting with 5mg for an adult dosage. You could go up to 10mg but above 10mg there is not usually much more benefit. I'm glad to hear that you are tapering the clonazepam. I'm always a fan of discontinuing regular use of it because it works best when taken only as needed

Unable to find any: References that list late menses as a possible melatonin side effect. Reasons for missed / late period include: an anovulatory cycle in which no egg is released, marked v or ^ in weight; eating disorder; over-exercising (endurance athletics), stress, travel, significant illnesses, oral contraceptives ; other meds, illegal drug use, breast feeding, hormone imbalances and medical problems.
