I use azithromycin to control my acne breakouts. Is azithromycin 500mg three tabs/week usually twice a month safe? Any short/long term side effects?

Yes: This is a good safe way to keep your acne at bay. If it is working for you and your physician is good with it, that's great. There are a number of other oral antibiotics and other oral medications that can used in addition to a number of topical solutions. Hi, I was prescribed with isotretinoin and azithromycin for my cystic acne, can they be used together?

Yep: The isotretinoin will exfoliate the skin to prevent "clogging of the pores" which is part of the acne process. The azithromycin will combat the p. acnes bacteria that contributes to inflammation. Great combo for acne! Hope this helps! ...Read more

Acne is getting worse while taking azithromycin and applying differin (adapalene) daily. What should I do?

Return to Dr: I like to see my acne patients when things are not working. There are many variables that effect an individual patient's response to medication. Your dr may need to change something in your acne regimen. Early in acne treatment it may appear things are worsening, just before they get better. Other changes in your health may impact acne as well. Good luck. ...Read more

I have average acne, not severe or mild, My doctor advised me to take isotretinoin (20g) and azithromycin (500mg) for 1 month each one day. Is it good?

Some ideas: I see that topical benzoyl peroxide / salicylic acid was not sufficient. You may wish to try just an antibiotic -- many choose a tetracycline -- along with the topical agent for a month before you go for the big guns. Isotretinoin is not for the faint-hearted. Ask whether the simpler regimen would be acceptable. ...Read more

Is oral clindamycin helpful for acne vulgaris? Already failed tx w/ doxy, minocycline, & azithromycin.

Is oral clindamycin helpful for acne vulgaris? Already failed tx w/ doxy, minocycline, & azithromycin.

Don't do it: Taking oral Clindamycin after 3 other good antibiotics failed is asking for another failure and an episode of c. Difficile colitis or worse. I'm going to assume that topical Clindamycin plus benzoyl peroxide plus an adequate dose of an oral tetracycline was a failure. Your next option is a trial or spironolactone with other rx or a dermatology consult for Isotretinoin -- if the latter, be brave! ...Read more

Azithromycin vs trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole. Which would be better to go clean up acne and scars?

Acne Rx: First, antibiotics should never, ever be used as sole therapy for acne. Topical benzoyl peroxide and/or retinoic acid are your best friends. Second, nothing will touch your scars -- I'm sorry your acne was neglected and you got scars in the first place. If you're offered isotretinoin, consider it seriously. The tetracyclines, erythromycin, or topical clindamycin, may be more helpful. ...Read more

What's the next best antibiotic class for treating adult acne after doxycycline and bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim)? Is cephalexin or azithromycin a good option?

Acne treatment: Acne is treated by several different medications. Antibiotics aim to treat common skin bacteria that may precipitate acne formation, but antibiotics are not always the cure. Drying agents, washes, benzoil peroxides may be needed. Some severe cases may require dermatology evaluations and tx such as accutane. Best to see the skin dr. (derm) and get tx.
