A protein urine test measures the amount of proteins, such as albumin, found in a urine sample. A blood test may also be done to measure the level of albumin. See: Serum albumin This test is most often performed when kidney disease is suspected. It may be used as a screening test.

I have SLE and MCTD and in a current flare.  My total random Urine protein test came back hi at 17.6 mg/dL.  Is this a concern for kidney involvement?

A random reading: is JUST THAT! RANDOM! However a 24 hour collection is indicated. Speak with the Health Care Provider who is treating your SLE! Hope this helps! DrZ ...Read more

Proteinuria: We generally calculate the urine protein to creatinine ratio and as long as the ratio is below 300 mg/g it is considered not significant (yours is only 135mg/g) so your proteinuria is not significant. But the Albumin level you mentioned, is it serum (blood) Albumin level? If yes, it is very low and unlikely! Please verify your Albumin level and it's source (blood or urine) . ...Read more
