Are steroid shots recommended to help get over URIs and ear infections such as otitis externa? And where on the body are they given?
Infections are invasions of some other organism (fungus, bacteria, parasite) or viruses into places where they do not belong. For instance, we have normal gut bacteria that live within us without causing problems; however, when those penetrate the bowel wall and enter the bloodstream, ...Read more

Hello, my son is 1yrs old and 28lbs. Dr gave him 400mg/5ml for URI & ear infection. Does this seem like a lot?
Incomplete info: Dosing on meds is determined both by weight & what is being treated. If it is a med that concentrates easily in the target, like amoxicillin in a urinary tract infection, you get by with less.In a middle ear infection where the germs differ & require more, you use more. The dose you list could be considered on the low side of normal for amoxicillin in an ear infection. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

What is the best treatment for a crick in neck that is going to my shoulders. I am recovering from a URI and sinus infection.
Gp said my 2 year old has a URI and chest infection (had x-ray) is there anything i can do to make him more comfortable as his cough is really bad.
URI: Sounds like a viral infection. Did your gp provide you with a nebulizer and albuterol for the coughing? We try not to recommend otc cough suppressants for the very young due to side effects. If his cough is due to drainage, you could try some saline drops to the nose and bulb suction. A warm heating pad to the chest could also help as could humidity. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Told take decongestant for URI w/ sinus infection & laryngitis. Won't it make the laryngitis worse? Saw ENT & no vocal cord issues but got prednisone.
Likely safe, but...: Seems like you have already been seen by at least one physician and maybe more than one.The best time to ask questions about med recommendations and review concerns is with the physician prescribing the treatment. So i would contact your physician mainly. In general using decongestants may be helpful, or may not. Studies are not impressive. Hydrate, avoid smoke, consider saline irrigation.Talk to doc. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

My four-year-old has a ear infection and and an URI. He has a slightly palpable supraclavicular lymph node in one side. Is this normal?
Yes: Small palpable nodes in kids are commonly found throughout the head & neck, including the supraclavicular area. These can arise from non specific illnesses, immunizations, or local events like a bug bite. These commonly enlarge and shrink over a 3-4 wk period to a resting size between that of a pea or small peanut. Larger/painful or those that seem to have poorly defined margins deserve close eval ...Read more

Is 100.5 a high fever I was sick with URI for 4 days my temp went down 99.6 but I had a ear infection and bronchitis I feel so much better. ?
Can an URI bring on a uri? I've had an URI for a few days, then saw the doctor yesterday for a painful uti. Initial urine workup showed a large amount of wbc's and blood in my urine. If both infections are bacterial in origin, did one bring on the other?
I have an URI and a Severe ear infection, have been taking Amoxicillon for the last 9 days woke up today with a burning sensation when I pee?
Yeast?: Amoxicillin and other antibiotics can predispose to vaginal candida (yeast) infections, by suppressing normal bacteria that keep yeast in check. Vulvar irritation and painful urination are common yeast symptoms, especially if the burning is "outside", i.e. comes primarily from urine contacting the vaginal opening, labia, etc. Contact your ObG or the doctor who prescribed the amoxicillin. ...Read more
I have had what I believe is a kidney infection for almost a week now. It started with severe lower back pain and pain urinating as well as bloody uri?
Have URI and was on clarithromycin for supposed sinus infection. I had two doses then started puking went to ER, got rehydrated and they stopped puking. I can't sleep, I am feeling so awful and still have fever. How long will this last for? What should
Fever: I would recommend like a nighttime medication for a cold. This will include some Benadryl to help you sleep and Tylenol (acetaminophen) to stay on top of the fever. Night time medications like a Nyquil usually work wonders to help you finally get some rest. Get some rest, hope you feel better. ...Read more
Had pelvic pain for a week, uri(wbc 1-2 , rbc-nil, epth- 4-6, niter- nil)ultr (-) for hernia (norm). Infection? Pain is better, but worried of sepsis
Sepsis: Medical definition is fever, rapid pulse (>90/min), rapid respirations (20/min or more), elevated WBC counts with immature cells. Any two of these constitutes sepsis if due to infection. Your doctor should be able to recognize this easily if present. Sounds like a simple case of cystitis (bladder infection) and not likely to cause sepsis. ...Read more

Middle ear fluid: First, zithromax is not a good drug for upper respiratory bacterial infections. If you have a hearing loss, it is most likely that you have fluid behind the ear drum. That fluid can be surgically removed and hearing should return immediately. First, however, get an audiogram (hearing test). If the hearing loss has been present for more than 3 weeks, see an ENT for therapy. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
