Upper back pain: The pain that you describe is typical of an inflamed rib head as it inserts into the spine. Anti-inflammatory medications, stretching and massage can help. Apply ice at night and moist warm heat in the morning. Chiropractors are helpful with this problem. Injection of the rib head with a cortisone shot is another treatment option. If the pain persists then a thoracic MRI scan is warranted. Read more

Costochondritis: There are some patients who haven't back pain with breathing. This may be a sign of inflammation involving the soft tissue surrounding the ribs which is cartilage. Seasonal flu: Seasonal flu it is very common viral infection. Usually the condition resolves on its own with home care. Drink water and get a good rest. Can forward head posture and rounded shoulders restrict your breathing? When taking a deep breath I have upper back pain and my accessory's are sore.
Contributing: Probably can cause some restrictive lung problems eventually but your problem is probably due to your underlying lung disease primarily. Your posture can also eventually lead to circulatory problems and neuro symptoms in your arms (thoracic outlet syndrome). I suspect that your underlying lung problems are severe. Sounds like he's: Coughing hard & has pleuritic chest pain; irritation of the lining around the lungs. Is he up-to-date on his immunizations? There have been some whooping cough (pertussis) outbreaks & older kids don't necessarily " whoop." he needs to see his pediatrician, who'll probably get a chesr xray & labs. Sadly, you shouldn't give him anything to suppress the cough unless his doctor gives the okay. Read more
