Upper Gi Series Vs Endoscopy
I know endoscopy is the best test for diagnosing gastric cancer but how good/ sensitive is the double contrast upper GI series at detecting it?
I am experiencing sore throat. My ENT doctor says I have chronic reflex and dysphasia. I've had a upper gi series and endoscopy both came back normal. Medication no real effect. Is surgery the next move or maybe a different medication. ?
Gastroenterologist: Your next step should be to return to your gastroenterologist. It may be that you need an alteration of your current medication or change of the dosage. If you were still having dysphagia, sometimes in esophageal dilatation, or stretching of the esophagus is useful. He will be better able to tell you based on the details of your situation. UGI is pretty safe: Upper GI series x-rays esophagus, stomach & upper small intestine after you drink a chalky solution to coat the lining along with fizzies to distend the upper gut. Serious complications are really rare, but some people don't tolerate the volume of liquid, the sensation of distension, or are intolerant to the solution itself. They may vomit or aspirate the oral contrast agent, or have diarrhea. ...Read more

Had a upper GI series test done this morning feeling bad my head aches my body hurts tired and cold is this normal?
Typically this study is done by drinking barium contrast which may cause constipation, so drink plenty and you may need a laxative for a day or two.
If the study was done by drinking gastrografin contrast, this could be the cause of your symptoms. As you are now hours past first drinking, this isn't an "allergy" (which can exist to the iodine in gastrografin), however you may have a sensitivity. ...Read more
Egd with pathology report, upper GI series or h. pylori test. are these two different tests. can you tell me about it?
Yes: Egd or upper endoscopy consists of direct visualization of the upper gi tract through passing a scope down to your upper part of duodenum. H pylori can be tested in blood, stool, or stomach biopsy. ...Read more
Had upper GI series today, dr says ther is lots of stuff from the stomach to the neck, what is it called and what is done for it.
Food in the esoph...: ...Agus is the most likely. And that means you may have ineffective emptying of the esophagus into the stomach after eating. A narrowing (stricture or scar tissue from acid reflux) is most likely but it could also be a tumor or ineffective muscle action in the esophagus itself (esophageal spasm). Next step? Upper GI endoscopy. ...Read more

Abdominal Pain: An upper GI would not reveal h. Pylori bacteria in the stomach, may not reveal gastritis(inflammation of stomach's lining) or gallbladder disease , depending upon technique & the expertise of the person interpreting the x-ray, even an ulcer can be missed. If symptoms persist, see your doctor. Referral to a GI specialist may be appropriate ultimately. ...Read more

My daughter is suffering from severe diarrhea an vomiting since her upper GI series this morning. What can we do to alleviate this distress?
Ugi series: This would be an unusual reaction to barium which may actually cause constipation. This may be a coincidental viral gastrointestinal infection. Drinking room temperature, flat ginger ale helps settle nausea. I don't know the patients age, but if she is old enough, taking kaopectate controls diarrhea. Diet should be light with broth and saltine crackers progressing to soft solids. See MD as needed. ...Read more
