I know endoscopy is the best test for diagnosing gastric cancer but how good/ sensitive is the double contrast upper GI series at detecting it?

I know endoscopy is the best test for diagnosing gastric cancer but how good/ sensitive is the double contrast upper GI series at detecting it?

Not that good: The key to improved survival of gastric cancer is early detection. Although a double contrast UGI series can detect gastric cancer, it is not that good at picking up small lesions. By the time a gastric cancer is detected by x-ray, it may be too late for cure. ...Read more

What kind of complications might happen from an upper GI series?

What kind of complications might happen from an upper GI series?

UGI is pretty safe: Upper GI series x-rays esophagus, stomach & upper small intestine after you drink a chalky solution to coat the lining along with fizzies to distend the upper gut. Serious complications are really rare, but some people don't tolerate the volume of liquid, the sensation of distension, or are intolerant to the solution itself. They may vomit or aspirate the oral contrast agent, or have diarrhea. ...Read more

Had a upper GI series test done this morning feeling bad my head aches my body hurts tired and cold is this normal?

Drink plenty: Typically this study is done by drinking barium contrast which may cause constipation, so drink plenty and you may need a laxative for a day or two.
If the study was done by drinking gastrografin contrast, this could be the cause of your symptoms. As you are now hours past first drinking, this isn't an "allergy" (which can exist to the iodine in gastrografin), however you may have a sensitivity. ...Read more

Egd with pathology report, upper GI series or h. pylori test. are these two different tests. can you tell me about it?

The test may include biopsy based on findings or clinical suspicion. Upper Gi series consists of x-rays taken after you swallow a barium based paste. Food in the esoph...: ...Agus is the most likely. And that means you may have ineffective emptying of the esophagus into the stomach after eating. A narrowing (stricture or scar tissue from acid reflux) is most likely but it could also be a tumor or ineffective muscle action in the esophagus itself (esophageal spasm). Next step? Abdominal Pain: An upper GI would not reveal h. Pylori bacteria in the stomach, may not reveal gastritis(inflammation of stomach's lining) or gallbladder disease , depending upon technique & the expertise of the person interpreting the x-ray, even an ulcer can be missed. If symptoms persist, see your doctor. Referral to a GI specialist may be appropriate ultimately. ...Read more

My daughter is suffering from severe diarrhea an vomiting since her upper GI series this morning. What can we do to alleviate this distress?

Ugi series: This would be an unusual reaction to barium which may actually cause constipation. This may be a coincidental viral gastrointestinal infection. Drinking room temperature, flat ginger ale helps settle nausea. I don't know the patients age, but if she is old enough, taking kaopectate controls diarrhea. Diet should be light with broth and saltine crackers progressing to soft solids. See MD as needed. ...Read more

OddsAbout6:1After10y: Barret's occurs in variable times after onset of GERD, but usually takes years. It is found in about 10-15% of people who are studied for GERD.People who have it are at a higher risk of cancer but it's still quite low (around .5%)These are just round numbers- and the time factor is unclear (from onset GERD to Barret's and from Barret's to cancer).Unless your GERD is really severe, I wouldn't worry ...Read more

When would you use an upper/lower GI series instead of endoscopy/colonoscopy?

When would you use an upper/lower GI series instead of endoscopy/colonoscopy?

Too sick: If you were too sick for the 2 procedures i.e. Severe end-stage COPD would put you at risk for the sedation or severe blood abnormalities in which case the non-invasiveness of both GI series would make those 2 tests more attractive. Also, sometimes endoscopes are not physically able to be performed due to anatomical variations. Gi aries could get around this problem. ...Read more
