Sounds like he's : Coughing hard & has pleuritic chest pain; irritation of the lining around the lungs. Is he up-to-date on his immunizations? There have been some whooping cough (pertussis) outbreaks & older kids don't necessarily " whoop." he needs to see his pediatrician, who'll probably get a chesr xray & labs. Sadly, you shouldn't give him anything to suppress the cough unless his doctor gives the okay. ...Read more

Productive cough?: If you are having productive sputum (cough) that's not relieved by your otc meds, it's time to see your doctor for a lung exam, (and possible chest xray) to rule out an uri, from walking pneumonia, depending on other factors /symptoms (fever, chills, etc).
