Upper Back Pain Lying Down
Severe upper back pain when initially lying down. Hurts in chest too. Anything serious? Been going on for 5 months getting worse
Back pain: It's difficult to determine the cause of the pain based on the limited description of symptoms. However progressive pain which is ongoing for five months is a red flag. I would recommend that you see a spine specialist or neurosurgeon to determine the cause of the pain and begin a treatment plan to eliminate it.
Thoracic (Upper Back) Strain (Definition)
Discomfort or pain in the back at the level of the rib cage to the neck. Although upper back pain is not as common as lower back pain, the causes are often the same and include muscle strain or irritation (most common), injury to the spine leading to slipped disc or degeneration, or the pinching of a nerve in the back. ...Read more
Hard to say: I would try to see a physician in real life to determine your cause of pain. Good luck
Upper back pain (1st time)on one side these past days, but only when lying down, it feels like there's a huge weight on it when I try to get up...?
Sounds muscular: As it is only of short duration and only occuring with certain positions or movement, it sounds muscular and should resolve with some time. You can try some over the counter medication and heat to the area like a heating pad. If it persists or worsens or if you develop any other symptoms, see your doctor.
18 year old female. Upper back pain for several days. Its noticed most when stretching and lying down. It worries me.?
Dysfunctional rib?: Could be referred pain from some organ, but unlikely. Key is the pain w/ stretching out & lying flat. Ribs should rise & fall w/ inhaling/exhaling, but when they lock down so they can't rise with inhalation or stretching/straightening, pain-sharp or severe aching-results, usually in upper back. Vertebrae may also be involved. A good osteopathic exam may find the cause & gentle manipulation may fix it.See 1 more doctor answer

I have upper back pain on my right side. It is most intense when I look down & is constant. Its sometimes absent when I just wake up but not for long?
Upper back pain: The pain that you describe is typical of an inflamed rib head as it inserts into the spine. Anti-inflammatory medications, stretching and massage can help. Apply ice at night and moist warm heat in the morning. Chiropractors are helpful with this problem. Injection of the rib head with a cortisone shot is another treatment option. If the pain persists then a thoracic MRI scan is warranted.

I just started having upper back pain when I stand up. It is intense at first but if I remain standing the pain level goes down.?
Have it checked: By doctor, since you can't stand all day to relieve back pain at work. Get a 2nd opinion from an osteopathic physician (DO), who can evaluate your entire musculoskeletal structure, and see where the cause is on your upper back, that could be originating from your lower back or sacrum that needs to be decompressed to get you out of pain. So, you can sit or stand comfortably, and not have to worry.
I am 28f. I am getting upper back pain in nights. By morning it is reducing. Mainly between down shoulders. What would be the reason?
May be muscle pain: It is difficult to say what is causing the pain without more information and physical exam. It is most likely muscle pain and may be related to day time activities and rest at night while you are sleeping makes it better. You can try over the counter Naprosyn (naproxen) or ibuprofen if you are not allergic to it and don't have peptic ulcer. If persistant see your doctor and get it checked. Message might help too

Upper back pain extending down my spine. I have barrett's esophagus from the purging. Could these be related?
Yes: Barrett's Esophagus can be accompanied by inflammation or ulceration of the esophagus. Pain can be in chest, upper abdomen & back. Also, purging (self-induced vomiting) can tighten chest muscles causing dresulting in rib dysfunction. When ribs then fail to move properly w/ respiration, upper back pain is common. If esophagitis isn't the cause, I recommend an osteopathic hands-on exam to check/fix ribs.
Really bad upper back pain behind rib and down the left side what could be the cause of it? Muscles?
Hard to say: Unless you injured it, it would be unusual to have really bad back pain from the muscles in your back. There are many potential causes some of which are musculoskeletal, but some which are not. A kidney infection, known as a pyelonephritis is just one example. Consider being checked. Thank you for the question.
My daughter woke up Today with sharp upper back pain and shoulder pain. It hurts whenever she is bending down or coughing. What Can it be?
Rib/vertebral dysf: Sounds like rib or vertebral dysfunction. Must rule out lung or other serious problem, but key may be pain w/bending. Ribs/vertebrae can get 'locked' for seemingly no reason-even during sleep & hurt w/coughing or certain movements. A good history & physical incl hands-on osteopathic exam may be the best way to find the cause. Osteopathic manipulation can free them & relieve the pain.See 1 more doctor answer
