Sounds like he's : Coughing hard & has pleuritic chest pain; irritation of the lining around the lungs. Is he up-to-date on his immunizations? There have been some whooping cough (pertussis) outbreaks & older kids don't necessarily " whoop." he needs to see his pediatrician, who'll probably get a chesr xray & labs. Quite a few causes: Chestwall itself, esophagus/stomache, lungs, heart, pancreas, and even liver problems can cause chest pain. In the young, more likely chestwall itself (strain from coughing). Chest pain with breathing is called pleurisy. Reactive airway disease/asthma can cause the symptoms you mention and zpak will not help. Cough syrup and albuterol inhaler may help. Consult your doc.
