Thoracic (Upper Back) Strain (Definition)

Discomfort or pain in the back at the level of the rib cage to the neck. Although upper back pain is not as common as lower back pain, the causes are often the same and include muscle strain or irritation (most common), injury to the spine leading to slipped disc or degeneration, or the pinching of a nerve in the back. ...Read more

Can stress and depression cause physical symptoms like upper back pain and shortness or breath, even at rest? 39y female.

See your doctor: It is possible to experience pain symptoms secondary to stress and depression. See your doctor for a physical exam to rule out other medical causes of your symptoms. Once other causes are ruled out, your doctor may suggest antidepressant medication to try to help reduce your symptoms. Depression and pain often coexist. It is important to treat both simultaneously. ...Read more

I have Chest ache on left, heart palpatations, dry cough, upper left back pain, shortness of breath and feeling nausia, any idea on the problem?

Need an exam: With those symptoms and the smoking history, I'd be most suspicious of a pulmonary problem like pneumonia, but there's a long list of possibilities, and you really should have someone examine you and listen to your lungs. Based on that, they might consider further testing. Feel better! ...Read more

33 former smoker. Persistent upper left back pain, fatigue, shortness of breath with exertion, on nexium (esomeprazole). Chest xray and ECG clear. What to do next?

Agree with above: Although you're young, given your h/o smoking and the constellation of symptoms you describe a chest ct may be warranted. I agree that a stress test will help as well. If major cardiac and pulmonary causes are ruled out, sometimes severe pain can present with fatigue and sob. Thus, if more life pressing causes are excluded, a more thorough workup of your back pain may help answer your questions. ...Read more

What causes sharp upper back pain when taking a deep breath?

Several things: It could be from a cracked rib or inflamed rib joint. A blood clot caught in the lungs can do this. Irritation of the lung lining can do it too. If you are having trouble catching your breath, call your doctor or go to an urgent care or emergency room. ...Read more

I caught a breath taking sharp upper back pain in my left side that shot to my abd in the same spot can it be a spasm? On hurts on deep breath

It could be: The doctors who ordered your test would have the best idea, since the considered most of the options. Would obviously also consider things in your upper belly on the left side, since your diaphragm, a dome shaped muscle under your lung, flattens during a deep breath, and pushes on the contents of your upper abdomen. ...Read more

Pleurisy (Pleuritis): You are likely having pleurisy (pleuritis). Go see your doctor. Typical if this is all that it is, a prescription of nsaids like Ibuprofen will help take care of it. But you have to go and ensure there is nothing else that could be irritating the lining of your lungs like a collection, etc. This is likely unrelated to your chronic back pain. ...Read more

Almost constant upper back pain, occasional chest pain, and shallow breathing throughout the day. The pain gets worse sometimes with deep breaths?

Rib pain: Most likely at your age is a pulled muscle or rib irritation in the area. However if it does not resolve with nsaids, ice/heat and rest, you may want to see a physician to evaluate further. You may want to consider an osteopathic physician (do) to see if manipulation of the ribs might be a treatment option. ...Read more

Can forward head posture and rounded shoulders restrict your breathing? When taking a deep breath I have upper back pain and my accessory's are sore.

Contributing: Probably can cause some restrictive lung problems eventually but your problem is probably due to your underlying lung disease primarily. Your posture can also eventually lead to circulatory problems and neuro symptoms in your arms (thoracic outlet syndrome). I suspect that your underlying lung problems are severe. I wonder about a alpha-1=antitrypsin deficiency leading to severe emphysema. ...Read more

I have been having upper back pain that radiates to the chest and I mistake it for chest pain. It's worse if I take a deep breath. My chest X-ray was normal. What could this be?

Possibly serious: It is possible that this pain could be serious. The most concerning possibility would be a blood clot in your lung. This would cause a feeling of shortness of breath. This is often not seen on a plain chest xray. You would need to go to the emergency room to be seen for this. The other likely less serious cause is a muscle pull. This would cause more pain with movement without a deep breath. ...Read more

Chances of lung cancer? -shoulder, upper back pain and sometimes a mild pain when I take a deep breath (left side)

Chances of lung cancer? -shoulder, upper back pain and sometimes a mild pain when I take a deep breath (left side)

Average: What you are describing does not raise specific concern for lung cancer and points more to chest wall irritation which can be from muscle strain, sometimes viral infection or exposure to inhaled irritants. Smoking is the major risk factor for lung cancer, and anyone over the age of 55 who has been smoking for at least 30 years (varies by amount) benefits from routine lung cancer screening ...Read more

I've been waking up with upper back pain mostly between left shoulder blade and spine. Hurts when I breath and can feel it in my left lung/ chest.?

Thoracic Spine: Thoracic spine areas will allow nerves to exit out of the spine and wrap around into the chest wall and abdomen. So herniated discs there can cause pain into these areas as well. I would consider seeing a pain specialist for treatment options like epidural steroid injection or even facet joint treatments. ...Read more

Had chest CT scan 3 months ago and was clear. Now I still have chest and back pain and shortness of breath. Can it be lung cancer even after clear ct?
