How long will it take for an untreated strangulated hernia to kill a person?

How long will it take for an untreated strangulated hernia to kill a person?

Depends: Strangulated is different than incarcerated. Incarcerated just means trapped. Strangulated means the trap is so tight it cut off blood supply and the tissue dies. If the tissue is fat, you may have pain etc, but survive for quite a while. If the tissue is intestine you will start vomiting, soon become septic and in a worst case could die within 24 hours if not treated. ...Read more

Hernia (Definition)

A hernia is a hole in the abdominal wall thru which the inner lining protrudes thru, creating a sac. Organs from within the abdominal cavity, such as the intestine, can protrude thru the hole and get stuck in the sac. Many hernias develop during fetal life and become evident in childhood or as an adult. Some develop following a prior abdominal operation. The cornerstone ...Read more

I have a small untreated umbilical hernia and no money for surgery. Am I going to die from it?

I have a small untreated umbilical hernia and no money for surgery. Am I going to die from it?

Doubtful.: While it is often best to fix this problem before it causes trouble, it is highly unlikely to kill you. The most concerning danger is the intestine cutting off it's blood supply when poking through the hernia. That's an emergency. So, if it starts getting bigger, or you feel uncomfortable pressure, and most definitely if it becomes painful, you should be examined right away, immediately. ...Read more

If I cannot get surgery for my untreated umbilical hernia (no money), will weight loss make it less problematic if I'm overweight/almost obese?

If I cannot get surgery for my untreated umbilical hernia (no money), will weight loss make it less problematic if I'm overweight/almost obese?

Hernia: weight loss may make this less problematic as there will be less force on the defect in your abdominal wall. Weight loss will not eliminate the problem and it will need surgical correction at some point. If you get pain at the hernia site and have a painful protruding mass which you cannot push back in while lying flat then you should seek medical attention. ...Read more

Damage intestines: The risks of having an umbilical hernia are that intestines can become trapped inside (incarcerated), and their blood supply can then be cut off (strangulation). That could cause necrosis (death) of that part of intestine, which could lead to a hole in the intestine wall. This is very rare but is serious. Usually untreated hernias just may cause some pain. ...Read more

Can a hernia in the throat be fatal if left untreated?

Can a hernia in the throat be fatal if left untreated?

Diverticulum: Zenker's diverticulum has been described as a "throat hernia". It is a pouch off the anatomical weak point in your hypopharynx and is associated with pain, pressure, swallowing problem, aspiration, infection, and other symptoms - not likely fatality. An upper GI contrast exam can be diagnostic. Surgical repairs (myotomy, pexy or stapling) are helpful in avoiding complication. ...Read more

Hiatal hernia: other than GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease)/heartburn, what other effects might it cause? Is it dangerous if left untreated?

Hiatal hernia: other than GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease)/heartburn, what other effects might it cause? Is it dangerous if left untreated?

Depends: Large hiatal hernias (or paraesophageal) hernias can cause chest pain, difficulty swallowing, and severe anemia from chronic bleeding. Only rarely do they cause life threatening problems such as gangrene. They are however frequently misunderstood as the cause of symptoms, so if a large hiatal or paraesophageal hernia is the diagnosis, see a general or thoracic surgeon with experience in lap repair. ...Read more
