Is it safe to take a low dosage of unisom (1/2 tablet) with pain medication (1 Norco (hydrocodone and acetaminophen) 10-325)?
Never took opiates. Failed drug screen. Ate poppy seed bagel for lunch same day, took Unisom night before. Contained diphendramine. Please help.

Ask: Typically this is not a problem before general anesthesia as long as it is 4-8 hours (depending on the time you are told not to have anything in your stomach). Sleeping pills: Unisom should not be taking more than recommended as it may cause CNS depression, which may impair physical and mental activities. Not to exceed 2 weeks of use. Unisom side effect: You should not take more than the recommended dosage of any sedatives or any medication. You will have excessive sleepiness and may have a hangover effect the next morning. Why do it?: The dose of unisom is 1 pill 30 minutes before bed. Why do you want to double it? You'd be more likely to have dry mouth, constipation, urinary retention, etc (all side effects of the medication) if taking more than the usual dose. OTC medications: Unisom is basically a sedating antihistamine marketed over the counter for sleep just like tylenol (acetaminophen) pm. These can have lasting hangover effects and should be used per fda recommendations listed on the box. They do cause tolerance to build so as per bottle, nightly use is not recommended. ...Read more
Probably you're safe: Unisom i believe contains Diphenhydramine ( benadryl) or a related antihistamine. Two of these is safe usually. 10 st. John's wort could cause too much serotonin leading to serotonin syndrome but i believe this is unlikely at this dose. The bigger question is why you would take this? Generally yes: The better question is why? Unisom contains mainly a sedating antihistamine in otc doses. This medication while it makes you sleepy with one, can often make people groggy or excessively tired with more than one. Sleep aids: Unisom is an anti-histamine and Natural Calm has magnesium. It is doubtful that taking the 2 together will give you a problem. It just isn't the best choice.
