HIV is also known as HIV/AIDS. Hiv infection is caused by a retrovirus....This retrovirus binds to CD4 cells (for the most part). You may detect the virus by several different methods. An elisa test (enzyme linked immunosorbent assay). You may also detect it by doing a test referred to as a western blot (a gel protein electrophoresis). Thirdly by pcr (polymerase chain reaction) which ...Read more
I did 4th Generation HIV test after around 4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12,14,15 weeks of an exposure.
Is this 100% conclusive? can i get back safely to my wife
Sero-conversion: The whole concept of delayed sero-conversion dates back to old & sloppy tests. PCR testing now will show virus in the blood with or without antibodies. If you need to cling to the old adages...at 6 months..99.99% of the population will have developed antibodies after an exposure..thus the 6 month window. I believe a colleague of mine Lyssette Cardona, MD is in Dubai..she's one of the best!! ...Read more

How long should I wait to get an accurate HIV test after (maybe) got exposed to it? And how long does the test itself take to give back the results?
Rapid testing HIV: You can get oraquick otc, a home oral test that is quite accurate, and then follow up with a more detailed antibody test at 4-6 weeks and again in three months. There are rare individuals who do not become positive until 6 mos. If you want to spend the money there is an RNA pcr which will be definitive if negative at 4 wks. Make sure, however, that you also get tested for other stds. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Plan: If you are HIV positive, plan for a life of compliance with the medications that will save your life, and gratitude to the biotechnology that makes them possible. Yes, gratitude. If you are HIV negative, plan for a future of safe loving, and be grateful that you can be tested accurately and that the disease is largely under control. Best wishes. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Too soon to test: You could have taken prophylactic treatment within a day or so of the exposure. However, testing one week after exposure will not be meaningful. if the result is negative it would not rule out HIV infection. The fastest and most specific way to diagnose would be to get a HIV nucleic acid test after 3 months, if the antibody test is negative at that time. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
Yes if done too soon: False results of HIV tests are exceedingly rare as long as enough time has passed since the last possible exposure. That time is 6-8 weeks for the standard "third generation" antibody tests, although official advice for these tests is for final testing at 3 months. For the "fourth generation" (also called DUO or combo) test for both antibody and p24 antigen, results are conclusive by 4 weeks. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
My boyfriend of over 1yr refuses to take an HIV test although I have taken one and got a negative result.?
There are several ways to detect the HIV virus. The first is by antibodies. This includes eia (enzyme immuno assay). The rapid HIV tests are these types. The second way detects proteins on the viral coat (western blot). This is a gel plate electrophoresis. Thirdly there is pcr (polymerase chain reaction). This detects and amplifies dna allowing a viral ...Read more
