Why does diabetes cause unexplained weight loss?

In a new case...

Weight_loss_surgery
In a brand new case of diabetes, especially Type 1, people experience excessive thirst, excessive hunger, and excessive urination. Their blood sugar is high, and they "spill" this sugar into the urine. The weight loss can be attributed to this calorie loss, but also to volume depletion, i.e., dehydration. Most Type 2 diabetics present more gradually, and will typically be overweight or obese.

Bowel changes and unexplained weight loss. What should I do?

See a GI specialist

Unexplained_weight_loss
Could be something minor but given those combination of symptoms, I would want to do a colonoscopy +/- upper endoscopy too.

Dr. Vance Harris answered:

Unexplained weight loss in one week. Delighted but is that OK?

Weight loss

I wouldn't worry too much about short-term weight loss over the course of one week. It really depends on your diet during the week as well as any fluid shifts or water loss. If this trend continues then you should see your Dr. Many people will lose a significant amount of weight when it gets hot but this only represents water loss.

Unexplained weight loss==is it always cancer or something bad?

Depends on health.

Cancer
This is a nonspecific finding that can mean several things. It could be cancer, or diabetes, of infection, or something else. Hyperthyroidism can do it. It also can be due to metabolism pills for weight loss. Other symptoms, and findings can point to a cause. It would be wise to see your doctor to find an explanation.

Dr. Marci Dietrich answered:

Will unexplained weight loss kill me if I don't get treatment?

Possible

Losing_weight
Hi, You need to have a full history and physical exam, also an eval of the stresses in your life. You need to have a diagnosis, unexplained weight loss is a symptom not really a diagnosis. Yes, its true that unexplained wt. loss could be a sign of a lethal disease such as some types of cancer. But, an experienced physician may find that your weight loss has an explanation and is treatable/curable.

What can I do for my unexplained weight loss without going to a doctor?

See a doctor

Losing_weight
Unexplained weight loss can be due to a number of factors: inflammatory disease, infectious diseases, malnutrition, or even serious conditions like cancer. None of these can be treated without a thorough evaluation by a healthcare professional. Unexplained weight loss is usually not a good thing: get it checked out and soon.

Yes

It depends on your age and dietary and life style factors, as well your current health condition. Higher the age, risk of cancer is high.

Dr. James W. Chu answered:

Bowel changes and unexplained weight loss. What kind of doctor should I see?

First, primary care

Loose_stools
Many different conditions can cause bowel changes leading to weight loss. Various diseases of the liver, gallbladder, pancreas, stomach and small or large intestines can cause nutrient malabsorption, diarrhea and weight loss. I would recommend starting with a primary doctor who can order relevant tests. Then they can refer to a gastroenterologist specialist, as needed, for more extensive testing.
