Pet, bone and gallium scans are all looking at the function, or physiology of the patient, and the anatomy is of secondary concern. Looking at bone: The CT scan is better than MRI in detecting bone fractures or pathologies involving the bone. MRI is better at distinguishing between soft tissues. CT scan is also faster & quieter than MRI. However, the CT scan uses radiation & there has been an explosion of radiation-related conditions in recent years. Each modality measures different things. Post op seminoma, in r testicle. Pet scan done for suspecious nodes. Pet scan result shows negative for any abnormalility. This means no seminoma?
Surveillance: A negative pet scan means there is no accumulation of cancer cells large enough to be discernible by the pet scanner. Several things: An f18-fdg pet scan will highlight cells in your body that are consuming glucose at a different rate (usually higher) than its surrounding tissues. A neoplasm with abnormal growth consumes more glucose and thus could be revealed with this test . It is a very sensitive but not very specific test. Mri uses strong magnetic fields instead of xrays to differentiate tissues and gives much better contrast than ct.
