Is it normal to still have pain where you had a umbilical hernia repair with mesh?

Yes, mild pain: It is normal to have mild pain, especially with strenuous activity, at the site of an umbilical hernia repair for a few weeks after surgery. Severe pain, or pain lasting longer, is unusual. If the pain is severe, and especially if there is a bulge in that area, you should see the surgeon promptly to make sure that the hernia has not recurred. ...Read more

Organs from within the abdominal cavity, such as the intestine, can protrude thru the hole and get stuck in the sac. What do you suggest if my child had umbilical hernia repair with mesh. now she is having unexplained swelling of lips and face.?

What do you suggest if my child had umbilical hernia repair with mesh. now she is having unexplained swelling of lips and face.?

Unknown: Unexlained swelling of lips and face suggests an allergic reaction, and should be seen right away by your pediatrician or an emergency room. Whether or not it has anything to do with the hernia repair would depend on when it was done. There are no known true allergies to synthetic mesh products, as they do not invoke an immune response. They can have problems though, so call the surgeon as well. ...Read more

Could use your help docs! my daughter had umbilical hernia repair with mesh. Now she is having unexplained swelling on her face?

Swelling.: Although swelling of the face, in the absence of other symptoms, suggests an allergic reaction, allergy to mesh is extremely uncommon. I suggest a combined consultation and evaluation both with your family physician or pediatrician as well as her surgeon. Her symptoms may or may not be related to her recent surgery and a thorough evaluation and consultation is necessary to sort things out. ...Read more

Old blood: It is very common to have some bleeding under the skin after an operation. That can collect there and is called a hematoma. Old blood turns a brownish color as it resolves. If it smells foul, there could be an infection. It should be healed by now, bit sometimes tales a little longer. Stick with you're surgeon for regular visits until healed, or inquire about another opinion. ...Read more

I had a laparoscopic umbilical hernia repair with mesh 2 months ago & there's a lump that disappears when I lay down like before. Should I be worried?

See your surgeon: It may be a small amount a fat or fluid superficial to the mesh - both of which are normal. It could represent a recurrent hernia as well - not normal. Best to get an exam by your surgeon to find out. Hope this helps! ...Read more

My daughter had umbilical hernia repair with mesh. now she is having unexplained swelling of lips and face. Could these be related?

My daughter had umbilical hernia repair with mesh. now she is having unexplained swelling of lips and face. Could these be related?

Doubtful: It depends on when the hernia was repaired in relation to the start of symptoms. If the operation was yesterday, she could be having an allergic reaction to some medication. If it was months to years ago, there is certainly no relation, as the mesh does not cause allergic type reactions. May be best to see her primary care provider to help sort it out. Hope this helps! ...Read more

This is a hole in the abdominal wall at the belly button, the location of the umbilical cord during fetal development. It usually closes by itself as it fills with scar tissue. Infants with a hernia here usually resolve by age 4-5. Adults may develop a hole here for unknown reasons, and will see a lump under the skin ("outie") where intra-abdominal contents have ...Read more
