Umbilical Cord On Baby
How can you tell if the fetus is tingled up in the umbilical cord? My baby is doing way less movement than usual, and he's only on one side.
Common issue: Babies that are tangled in their cord will generally start to show evidence of distress after labor starts if the tangling begins to decrease blood flow through the cord. It is unusual for that tangling to produce any changes during the stable pre-labor period.Diminished movement late in pregnancy can reflect lack of room as kicks turn more into shuffles. ...Read more
Confusing question: If your ? Is about a umbilical hernia in an infant, the response depends somewhat on the size & age of the infant. They are common & most self heal as the child's abdominal muscles become stronger with age. By 1-2 yrs most have disappeared. Those that are very large or tend to trap intestinal contents may need to be fixed, but most will wait to see if the improve with age. ...Read more
Heard it's beneficial to leave the umbilical cord attached to baby for 3 to 5 min so blood can go back to baby. True, benefits to doing this? dangers?
Maybe, maybenot: The idea is there is baby blood in the placenta & it is a good source of iron. Babies don't make much new blood in the first months so their level starts out higher than adults to begin with & normally falls as baby grows. The problem with this move is you can let too much blood go across & babies blood will be too thick & could lead to kidney damage or stroke. I'd avoid it. ...Read more
Not at all: There is nothing to worry about because of the baby's umbilical cord near the face. That is normal, the cord is usually free to float about in the amniotic fluid, so if you looked again later the cord would likely have moved to another area. It poses no risk to the baby. ...Read more
Varies with location: These are collected at my local hospitals & stored in a cold facility for an extended period by the lab.The OB occasionally requests a pathologist examine the cord & or placenta for signs of breakdown or infection. If no issues have surfaced during the storage period they are destroyed. ...Read more
At 30 wks ultrasound there is a single loop of umbilical cord loosely entwining baby's neck..is there any risk?.what are the chances of stillbirth?
Chances low: It is not uncommon to have the cord around the neck before birth. It may become disentangled naturally. Sometimes during labor if the cord is around the neck the infant may have fetal distress that can be picked up by fetal monitoring during labor. I would not be too worried right now as long os the fetus shows signs of movement. Your OB doc can follow this during the pregnancy. ...Read more
My babies umbilical cord fell off today(baby is 1 Week Old). Do I put anything on it to help it heal faster?? The belly button is also outie.
Not necessarily: The umbilical stump is made to fall off - after it does there is often very little needed to facilitate it completing its healing. You can use a small drop of liquid soap (not antibacterial) to aid in the remainder drying out - but if you do nothing it will likely be just fine! If it is not healed by the 2 week visit - your provider will take care of the rest. ...Read more
Difficult issue: Most women have at least one such fear/dream during pregnancy.I think you would be odd if you did not.Cord incidents do happen, but rarely. The baby flips the most during the 10-14 wk period. But nature tolerates these events.I have had a baby with 5 neck wraps that grew up, was a cheerleader and graduated a few yrs ago.I have seen a kid with 3 true knots in the cord who did well.Good luck. ...Read more
Blood cell disorders: It is the blood obtained from the cord, not the cord itself, that is being used to treat disease. Early, primitive cells, called stem cells, are used to treat many disorders of the blood, including aplastic and other anemias, leukemias, certain immunologic diseases, and even some metabolic disorders. Ongoing research includes non-blood diseases, such as stroke, diabetes, and even heart attacks. ...Read more
