Question unclear: If you are in the process of undergoing a detailed evaluation your doctors have far more data than you can provide here. Herpes of the geniculate ganglion, Lyme disease, sarcoidosis and other entities must be considered, but HealthTap is not the place for individual diagnoses to be made. Good luck and best wishes. ...Read more

At 20 wk ultrasound, if they push hard on stomach to get view of the brain does it hurt the baby? Stomach hurt during, but not afterwards.

Ultrasound technique: It's pretty common to have to push on babies during ultrasound to get them into the right position to be able to see all of their anatomy. This does not hurt the baby, although it may cause a little soreness of the uterine muscle. If you have another ultrasound in your pregnancy, try drinking some juice about half an hour beforehand so that the baby will be moving around by itself. ...Read more

Ultrasound: Even though we did not get the complete result of your twins ultrasound, it is best to rely on your treating physician for information concerning it. If you need a second opinion (especially for twins) I suggest you take the Ultrasound images, which you can check out from the facility which did the ultrasound, and see a Maternal Fetal Specialist. They are the experts in this field. ...Read more

I have upper arm swelling between my shoulder and elbow. I have had several blood tests, 3 mri's (brain, throat, cervical spine) and ultrasound of my arm for blood clot, chest X-ray and everything is normal. Any thoughts?

Muscular: It sounds like a muscle issue. I'm not sure why a brain or throat MRI would be done for upper arm problem. If it is painful or affecting your function, I would have it checked out again. ...Read more

At sons year od checkup dr ordered an ultrasound of his brain for monday said his head size is in 95th percentile he appears very healthy was surprised to find out he's 18 lbs only because he loves to eat very active fun baby

Hello.: Hello. Doctor's check babies head sizes (head circumference) and compare it on a chart to other children of that age. 95th percentile means that his head is larger than the "average" head size at that age. I am glad that you have a healthy and active baby. Take care. ...Read more

30 week ultrasound showed asymmetrical brain ventricles on fetus. Rest of the scan perfect. Is this a normal variant?

30 week ultrasound showed asymmetrical brain ventricles on fetus. Rest of the scan perfect. Is this a normal variant?

Not really.: No, this is not a normal variant and is usually indicative of some type of compromise and blood flow, to the side of the brain where the ventricle is more prominent. The good news, is that a fetus's brain is very resilient, and as long as all else goes well from here on in, the baby can develop normally. ...Read more

I have low copper and low curleoplasmin... would wilsons disease show in my liver on a ultrasound or on a brain mri? Both normal? Do I have WD?

Wilson's disease: You don't have the diagnosis yet. There are several tests that still need to be done including a 24 hour urine copper and liver biopsy for copper quantification. There can be other reasons for the results you report. ...Read more

Lymphoma: Lymphoma is a pathological diagnosis which can only be diagnosed by biopsy (lymph node biopsy or bone marrow biopsy) followed by pathological analysis by trained pathologist. All the blood work you listed and imaging can not and will not be able to make the lymphoma diagnosis. EBV infection may increase certain lymphoma incidence, but its alone should not be used for diagnosis. ...Read more

Can an ultrasound show if baby has any brain or heart condition? Is there any condition ultrasound doesn't show?

Can an ultrasound show if baby has any brain or heart condition? Is there any condition ultrasound doesn't show?

Large changes: Ultrasound has its limits. It is benign and so does not use radiation or anything else which will put the mother or baby at risk. But it is of lower resolution than x-ray type scans. It will show major organ changes or failures. It cannot show any changes from most biochemical or inherited conditions. So for example it would show anencephaly (no higher brain) but not phenylketonuria. ...Read more

Female two half mth ago had TIA. Treatment with Clopidogrel and Fibrazate. Neck Bruit diseased vein Ultrasound, Brain Scan. Prognosis moving forward?

Depends on risks: At 76, you have a greater chance of having a stroke than a younger person. A bruit in the neck is usually due to plaque in an ARTERY, not a vein. Assuming your brain scan did not show other disease, and ultrasound demonstrated arterial plaque, you should consult a vascular neurological specialist to discuss the relative risks of operation versus medical treatment alone. ...Read more

Are Transcranial Doppler (TCD) and Brain Ultrasound the same? If not how are they different and which is better for what?

Yes and no: "Brain ultrasound" is a nonspecific term, like "automobile." TCD is a specific term, like "Toyota Camry." "Ultrasound" by itself refers only to imaging technology. It doesn't tell you anything about how you're using it or what you're looking AT. ...Read more

Our baby is at 36 weeks. The recent ultrasound showed growth from 35% to 37%. There may also be increased blood flow to the brain. Should we worry?

Ok: An average baby will be measured at 50% in growth. Your baby's size is a little below average, but entirely normal. Interestingly, these measurements have nothing to do with the adult size/heighth of your child. I've never seen a report of increased blood flow to the brain, so I'm not sure of the significance of that...Probably good if anything. ...Read more

Why the overpressure on the anterior fontanelle by neonatal brain ultrasound cause bradycardia of the neonate?

Why the overpressure on the anterior fontanelle by neonatal brain ultrasound cause bradycardia of the neonate?

Cushing reflex: Increased intracranial pressure from any cause at any age & decreased blood flow to certain parts of the brain can cause Cushing's triad: increased blood pressure, irregular breathing, & bradycardia. Since a neonate's skull bones aren't fused, increased pressure causes the fontanelle to bulge. Doctors will determine the cause - hydrocephalus, bleeding, infection, etc. & reduce the pressure ASAP. ...Read more

See a specialist: If you have been trying to conceive for more than a year without success, it is time to see a specialist in fertility medicine, also know as reproductive endocrinology. You don't mention testing for tubal patency and blocked tubes can cause infertility. The specialist can review all your test results thus far and let you know what your treatment options are. Hope this helps. Best wishes. ...Read more

What does transverse diameter cerebellum, slightly prominent mean on a prenatal ultrasound report?

Probably nothing: You'll have to ask the OB/GYN if there's any clinical significance to that finding since there is much more to both the report as well as the pregnancy than you have told us. The statement by itself is saying that the technologist doing the ultrasound feels the WIDTH of the cerebellum (part of brain in back that controls balance) is VERY WELL visualized. My GI doc ordered me an ab ultrasound for today. Colonoscopy in two weeks just to "ease my mind". Is that a long time and is an ab utrs reliable?

Colonoscopy: Is the best test to look for colon cancer or polyps. Two weeks is a reasonable time to wait to do a colonoscopy, especially if the GI doctor thinks you are low risk. Abdominal ultrasound was probably not ordered to look at the colon directly. Ultrasound is reliable for evaluating many of the abdominal organs including the liver, gallbladder, spleen and kidneys. ...Read more

Sonogram (Definition)

An ultraound, also known as a sonogram, is a painless and relatively inexpensive imaging test that utilizes sound waves instead of ionizing radiation. There are no side effects. Ultrasound can give us two-dimensional, and in some applications three-dimensional, images of structures and organs in virtually any part of the body. In addition to diagnostic uses, such as evaluating abnormalities in the abdomen, pelvis, and breast, ultrasounds are commonly used to guide needle and catheter placement in a variety of surgical ...Read more
