Sonogram (Definition)

An ultraound, also known as a sonogram, is a painless and relatively inexpensive imaging test that utilizes sound waves instead of ionizing radiation. There are no side effects. Ultrasound can give us two-dimensional, and in some applications three-dimensional, images of structures and organs in virtually any part of the body. In addition to diagnostic uses, such as evaluating abnormalities in the abdomen, pelvis, and breast, ultrasounds are commonly used to guide needle and catheter placement in a variety of surgical ...Read more

Well circumscribed hypoechoic 4.8 cm cystic mass. Thickened internal septations, perifpheral mural nodularity and calcification. Pain upper abdomen.

Ovarian: I assume the report is describing an ovarian cyst which may be fluid filled. If so, your gynecologist is best qualified to evaluate and advise you. It is not clear if this is the cause of your abdominal discomfort since the discomfort is not in the pelvic area. Other imaging studies may be recommended. ...Read more

Can Ovarian serous cystadenocarcinoma cyst resemble functional cyst on MRI?

Can Ovarian serous cystadenocarcinoma cyst resemble functional cyst on MRI?

No: A simple cyst has a very specific benign appearance, while a cystadenocarcinoma usually has characteristics that are pathognomonic for a complex mass. A benign hemorrhagic cyst may resemble a worrisome cystadenoca. If you are worried about an ovarian cyst, talk to your doctor. You can do an ultrasound in 4-6 weeks. If it is a cancer, it will not be the same size or have the same characteristics. ...Read more

The left ovary with 4cm hypoechoice lesion complex cyst, hemorrhagic cyst endometrium a mass. Color and Doppler flow signal demonstrate annexa bilater?

Hemorrhagic Cyst: Since you are trying to get pregnant, do a quantitative BHCG pregnancy test to rule out a early intrauterine pregnancy or a ectopic pregnancy. If this is negative, then this is most likely a hemorrhagic corpus luteum cyst. Do a follow up ultrasound in 6 weeks to confirm it is gone before you resume your infertility treatments. ...Read more

Fibroids: The muscle of your uterus looks irregular. While this can be due to endometriosis it is most frequently caused by small fibroids. This finding like all lab or x-ray findings is best understood in the context of your symptoms which led to the testing. Lacking that context and your medical history, it is difficult to say more. ...Read more

Ultrasound says complex ovarian cyst, septated, internal echos and avascular. Says could be possible haemorrhagic cyst but i'm worried of cancer?

Follow-up required: In a patient of your age, it is likely self-limited and very well could represent a hemorrhagic cyst. However, a repeat ultrasound 6 weeks following the first is suggested to document resolution or decrease in size and to re-evaluate for patency of the ovarian artery. ...Read more

Ultrascanning abdomen report says - retroverted bulky uterus with thickened endometrium, left simple functional ovarian cyst. What does this mean?

See GYN: The thickening of the endometrium (lining of the uterus) needs to be checked out. Usually the doctor will do an endometrial biopsy to see if the cells are normal or abnormal. A functional ovarian cyst is nothing to be concerned about and is just related to ovulation usually. ...Read more

Can a cystic tumour be cancerous? 27cm septated ovarian cyst. Thanks

Can a cystic tumour be cancerous? 27cm septated ovarian cyst. Thanks

Yes: It can. It would be helpful to know your age and history to comment further. Septated cysts are also a malignancy risk but there are septated benign tumors too. Do you mean 27 cm or 27 mm? The smaller one 27 mm is fairly low risk regardless; if you mean the larger (27 cm) the risk is correspondingly higher. I hope this helps, good wishes. ...Read more

Ultrasound showed enlarged right ovary and thickened uterus--possible miscarriage?

Ultrasound showed enlarged right ovary and thickened uterus--possible miscarriage?

Not necessarily.: The differential diagnosis includes ectopic pregnancy (life-threatening), miscarriage and early normal pregnancy with or without ovarian pathology (it could be a corpus luteum normal cyst). Serial beta HCG testing and a follow-up sonogram should help your ob/gyn reach the correct diagnosis for you soon. Best of luck! ...Read more

Left ovary obscured on internal ultrasound?

Left ovary obscured on internal ultrasound?

It's possible: for an ovary to not be visualized if it is positioned behind bowel loops. The ultrasound beam does not penetrate through bowel gas. If the ovary cannot be seen on transvaginal ultrasound, it can sometimes be successfully visualized on transabdominal ultrasound. If that fails, pelvic MRI is also useful. ...Read more

Complex ovarian cyst w/intern.Septations, submuc. Fibroids, nabothian cysts, liver cyst, hernia. All new w/in last 8 weeks. Possible cancer? Type?

Slow down a bit...: Ok, you have a lot of issues just recently identified. I'm doubtful you have any cancer. Your biggest concern appears to be the ovarian cyst, which is probably benign, but you need to be evaluated by your gyn. The hernia is an elective process, and the liver cyst is probably congenital. Fibroids and nabothian cyst can also be evaluated by your gyn. Take a breath and make an appointment. Good luck. ...Read more
