The: The ultrasound dating now is remarkably accurate. There can be discrepancies in the dates that the patient has from the date of menstrual period, but the ultrasound dating is remarkably accurate based on the "crown rump length" of the fetus, which is the measurement of the baby from the crown of the head to the tip of its bottom, the development of the heart, and other vital organ which can already be identified by ultrasound dating. A 12 week ultrasound date should be very accurate.

Sonogram (Definition)

An ultraound, also known as a sonogram, is a painless and relatively inexpensive imaging test that utilizes sound waves instead of ionizing radiation. There are no side effects. Ultrasound can give us two-dimensional, and in some applications three-dimensional, images of structures and organs in virtually any part of the body. In addition to diagnostic uses, such as evaluating abnormalities in the abdomen, pelvis, and breast, ultrasounds are commonly used to guide needle and catheter placement in a variety of surgical ...Read more

Ultrasound at 12 weeks showed nuchal translucency was 4mm. What does this mean?

Ultrasound at 12 weeks showed nuchal translucency was 4mm. What does this mean?

Nuchal Translucency: Nuchal Translucency is a screening test to determine risk of chromosome abnormalities in a fetus. When the NT is greater than 3.5 mm, there is a 1 in 5 chance of a chromosome abnormality such as Turner or Down syndrome, or Trisomy 18. Additional tests should be ordered by an OB or genetic counselor for confirmation. A mother may decide to continue or end of the pregnancy based on the information.

If u have an ultrasound at 12 weeks and it comes back saying u are 12 weeks + 4 days - is that enough of a difference to move up your due date?

If u have an ultrasound at 12 weeks and it comes back saying u are 12 weeks + 4 days - is that enough of a difference to move up your due date?

Depends: It depends on how much different there is from the due date calculated by the first day of the last period. If the difference is less than 7 days, we usually wouldn't change the due date. If more than 7 days, we usually would except in rare situations where we are 100% sure of the conception date.

I'm due aug 30th according to ultrasound at 12 weeks, 1st ultrasound at 6 weeks said due date aug 29th, my LMP nov 18 need my conception date range?

I'm due aug 30th according to ultrasound at 12 weeks, 1st ultrasound at 6 weeks said due date aug 29th, my LMP nov 18 need my conception date range?

Early US: Early ultrasounds are very accurate. Your 12 week ultrasound and 6 week ultrasound are within a week of each other. Hence your due date is based on your early ultrasound.

I'm due aug 30th according to ultrasound at 12 weeks, 1st ultrasound at 6 weeks said due date aug 29th, my LMP nov 18 need my conception date range :)?

US dates: The ultrasound dates are most accurate. If the us at "6 weeks" estimated that the baby was actually 6 weeks. You likely conceived about 4 weeks before that date.

Ultrasound at 12 weeks. Baby looked healthy. What are the chances of miscarriage after this?

Ultrasound at 12 weeks. Baby looked healthy. What are the chances of miscarriage after this?

Unlikely: Most miscarriages occur in the 1st trimester. As long as there are no other risk factors unlikely. All the best.

I am 12 weeks and ultrasound tech didn't locate kidneys?

12 weeks: 12 weeks is still early for a formal anatomic scan, so this isn't necessarily cause for alarm. In a general OB office the techs' skills with early ultrasound also vary alot. At 15-16 weeks in a perinatal specialty office, not seeing kidneys is very serious.

Can 12 weeks pergncey hide and not show in ultrasound not even a sac. Or not even in blood work.

Not likely: If pregnancy test negative and no pregnancy on ultrasound, you are not likely to be pregnant. Even an ectopic or so called tubal pregnancy at 12 weeks would have symptoms and positive pregnancy test.

At 12 weeks the ultrasound technician saw that my fetus has penetrated the empty sac of the vanishing twin. How could this be?

At 12 weeks the ultrasound technician saw that my fetus has penetrated the empty sac of the vanishing twin. How could this be?

Good question: I am not sure what the ultrasound technician may have meant if he/she really stated the surviving fetus has penetrated the empty sac of the vanishing twin. If he/she is implying that the membranes of the vanishing twin are somehow wrapping around the surviving fetus, then this is a situation that you would want to have clarified by a Maternal Fetal Medicine specialist. Discuss a referral.

According to ultrasound I am 12 weeks today (June 15, 2014) but I'm sure my LMP was march 5, 2014. How could I be 12weeks? When was conception?

According to ultrasound I am 12 weeks today (June 15, 2014) but I'm sure my LMP was march 5, 2014. How could I be 12weeks? When was conception?

It's an estimate.: Re: your last question, if you're SURE your LMP was Mar. 5, 2014, we can estimate that conception was on Mar 19. Re: your ultrasound, it is important to understand that the age of your fetus is obtained by taking measurements. An example would be femur length. When these measurements are collated, an estimated fetal age can be obtained and it may vary from your dates.

Went for an ultrasound that measured my baby at 14 weeks 2 days the doctors told me they are using a due date which predicts I'm 12 weeks which is right?

Ultrasound dating: Your ultrasound dating should not be more than 1 week off from your due date at this point in your pregnancy. Assuming this was your first ultrasound you should talk with your doctor about whether or not she wants to change your due date.

How come ultrasounds done at 6-8 weeks are considered more accurate than 12 weeks?

How come ultrasounds done at 6-8 weeks are considered more accurate than 12 weeks?

Less variability: There is very little difference in size between different 6-8 week embryos. Therefore there is less uncertainty of their ages. The further along the pregnancy gets, the greater the manifestations of individual differences. So a fetus that will be 9 lbs at birth will look bigger than one destined to be 6 lbs.

Can an ultrasound mistakenly say your 9 weeks if you think your 12 weeks?

Ultrasound dates: Generally speaking, ultrasound evaluation with reported dates in th 9 week range are accurate to within 4-5 days. Unless you only had sexual intercourse around the 12 week timeframe (or had in-vitro fertilization), the ultrasound dates are more accurate than dates from the patient;s menstrual history.

Are ultrasounds accurate at dating conception at 12 weeks?

Are ultrasounds accurate at dating conception at 12 weeks?

Much more than: Later in gestation. First trimester ultrasound is most accurate at estimating gestational age within 5-7 days (depends on the center). It trails off after that. General rule: 2nd trimester scans for dating are +/- 14 days and 3rd trimester is the least accurate (+/-21 days).

Can a baby hide at 12 weeks in ultrasound or should be clear to see it even if I have retrovired uters?

Easy to see: A 12 week fetus can be easily seen with transabdominal or endovaginal ultrasound.

At 12 weeks scan the ultrasound technician saw that the baby has penetrated the empty sac of the vanishing twin. How can this be?

Clarification: I would schedule a visit with your doctor to ask for clarification on the sonogram findings. This is such a specific question it requires someone to view the images of the sonogram to be able to interpret the results
