Doctor recommended Armour Thyroid for borderline TSH saying it's better than synthroid, (thyroxine) why?

Armour has bothT4+T3: Synthroid (thyroxine) contains t4; however, Armour Thyroid contains T3 and t4. Thus, when a person switches to armour, the fact that T3 is approximately four times as potent as T4 must be taken into account. ...Read more

Should I take Synthroid (thyroxine) for hypothyroidism?

Synthroid (thyroxine) vs NDT: Synthroid (thyroxine) is not for everyone. Many feel much better with NDT (natural desiccated thyroid)... Armour, Westhroid, NatureThroid. I specialize in this and help people transition from synthetic to natural. A good book to read is "Stop the Thyroid Madness, II" of which I authored Chapter 3. See your doctor: Levothyroxine is not dosed that way. If your TSH is high, you need levothyoxine. If you are on levothyroxine, you need more. The average dose of levothyroxine is about 125 mcg/day, but the range is broad and everyone is different. ...Read more

Should methimazole be dosed on TSH or ft4, t4, t3, (liothyronine) ft3 levels?

Should methimazole be dosed on TSH or ft4, t4, t3, (liothyronine) ft3 levels?

All of the above: Methimazole is a thionimide that inhibits the formation of thyroid hormone it is important to measure tsh, ft4 ; ft3 (liothyronine) levels to have a better idea of the physiology causing the hyperthyroidism, ie is it subclinical hyperthyroidism, t3 (liothyronine) preferential secretion, or severe thyrotoxicosis. The TSH can be very suppressed with only minimally elevated t4/t3 (liothyronine) which would not need as high a dose. ...Read more

Is Armour Thyroid a good supplement for hypothyroidism treatment?

Is Armour Thyroid a good supplement for hypothyroidism treatment?

T3 (liothyronine) and T4: t3 (liothyronine) thyroid is active thyroid. T4 thyroid converts to t3 (liothyronine). T3 (liothyronine) gets metabolized fast. High t3 (liothyronine) will suppress tsh. TSH stimulates the thyroid to make t4 and t3 (liothyronine). For some people armour thyroid is good. For some it has a little too much t3 (liothyronine). There is medicine that is all t3 (liothyronine) and all t4. I like armour thyroid. T4 is popular. ...Read more

Does taking Synthroid (thyroxine) daily fior hypothyroidism increase your risk for cancer? In males?

Does taking Synthroid (thyroxine) daily fior hypothyroidism increase your risk for cancer? In males?

No. Synthroid (thyroxine): Simply replaces absent or inadequate thyroid hormone. It prevents you from being hypothyroid, or perhaps being overstimulated by tsh, the pituitary hormone that drive thyroid growth. There is no risk of it causing a cancer. Some would put you on it if yo had thyroid cancer, to prevent the TSH from stimulating its growth. ...Read more

Brand Synthroid (thyroxine): Levothyroxin (LT4)=generic name for thyroid hormone. There are sev brands with Synthroid being best known (Levoxyl, Unithroid...)Each dose has about the same amount of LT4, but the FDA allows some variability. They also use diff fillers, which changes absorption. Tiny dose changes make a big diff in some people & diff brands can be like a diff dose in some. Anyone taken armour, thyrolar (thyroxine and liothyronine)?

Anyone taken armour, thyrolar (thyroxine and liothyronine)?

Not the best: All of the major professional societies for thyroid specialists, the endocrine society, the american thyroid association, and the american association of clinical endocrinologists have issued formal statements indicating that levothyroxine is the best choice for most patients. Both armour and thyrolar (thyroxine and liothyronine) provide too much T3 relative to t4, making it very difficult to keep tsh, free T4 & T3 normal. ...Read more

Hypothyroid patient for 10+ years. OnThyroxine tablet. TSH level is not stable and keeps fluctuating. Drug Dosage needs to be constantly adjusted.

The range: and NORMAL variability of TSH actual levels and MEASUREMENTS make constant adjustment of the dosage of thyroid replacement difficult at best and probably not indicated! Based upon 3-6 MONTH testing the dosage should be adjusted and remain at that level until the next testing!!! Thyroid replacement is NOT like IJNSULIN ......My Opinion Only HOPE it is helpful!
