Good question: The problem is that as an otologist, I do not know what kind of pathology you had in the middle ear. Overall, tympanoplasty results in about 50% in hearing improvement. However, as mentioned, one needs to know if you had destruction of the bones in the middle ear, how large the perforation is and whether you have any inner ear involvement. Not sure: There are 2 main types of hearing loss: sensorineural (inner ear) and conductive (problem with sound getting to the inner ear). A hole in the eardrum may cause conductive loss, but you may also have a separate inner ear problem as well. Therefore, it is unclear how much hearing improvement would be expected with surgery.
