My 6 week old baby tends to gasp/lose breath while sleeping, what could it be should I be worried? Her provider said it's just baby noises but it's not

Hard to say: In early weeks, babies can go though a transition pattern called periodic breathing. This is the system figuring out how fast/deep to breathe during the varying states.(sleep/rest/feed/active) It can be fast panting or s;ow deep, there can be a short pause up to 10 sec. By 6 weeks this is usually less noticeable, but occasional pauses can remain. If you think your doc is clueless, get a 2nd opinion ...Read more

Periodic breathing: Newborns breath fast...Around 40-50 x a minute. They also have a cycle of breathing called periodic breathing where they breathe very fast then slow it down and can have an interval of up to 10-15 seconds of "holding their breath" then it starts over. As long as she is pink and eating well and in no distress she is fine. If worried at all see your pediatrician..Reassurance is very helpful. ...Read more

Can babies breathe through their mouth if their nose is stopped up while asleep?

Can babies breathe through their mouth if their nose is stopped up while asleep?

Depends on age/posit: In the first 6m the neck is so short the baby must hold the head up & back to drop the jaw & mouth breathe. This is not a natural position so babies seldom sleep well. The growth of the neck by about 2-3 cm over that time allows the head to be neutral with the jaw open. In early infancy the nose must be clear to breathe without a struggle. ...Read more

2 week old baby snorts when she breathes and sounds like she's snoring when she sleeps. No fever and appetite is good. Is she ok?

Yes: Nasal congestion in an otherwise normal baby is not uncommon. If acting normal and feeding well, no cause for concern. Saline (salt water) nose drops may help. Exposure to cigarette smoke aggravates the situation. If not feeding well or has a fever (100.4 or higher), seek immediate medical help. ...Read more

My week old baby has been sleeping so much the last two days, and not eating as much per feeding. He hasn't been fussy but grunting a lot . Pooping n urinating just fine too. Is he ok? What's wrong?

Depends: Not sure what you mean by grunting but that word bothers me a bit. The sleep, eating and pooping sounds ok. Does his breathing sound ok? If concerned i would not hesitate to take your baby to the pediatrician . Grunting is not a normal baby sound but it might be just your description for a normal sound. ...Read more

Homemade saline drop: If your baby can't eat because his nose is so stuffed or if he's working harder to breathe (look at his chest without close on and watch him breath) then you should seek care from your doctor. Saline drops are: 8 ounces of water (1 measuring cup) with 1/2 teaspoon of non-iodized table salt and a pinch of baking soda. Use a fresh batch every time. Only use two drops at a time. ...Read more

Should a 2 week old baby be sleeping all night 6 hours or longer?

If your lucky: Some infants will develop a feeding pattern that follows the normal wake sleep pattern their mother had in pregnancy. If they are feeding effectively during the day and gaining appropriate weight it is fine, especially for the larger babies. If a baby is tiny, 5-6 lb, I want them wakened to feed at night. After they get close to 8 lb I worry less about their feeding cycles. ...Read more

My 5 week old baby is congested. What can I to help him breath better?

My 5 week old baby is congested. What can I to help him breath better?

Saline drops: Saline drops are available over the counter. Put drops in one nostril, (3-10, until you hear him swallow), wait 30-60 sec, insert bulb syringe into nostril as far as it will go, and suction. Babies don't know how to blow their noses, but this will relieve the congestion. It's especially helpful before feeding or sleep and can be repeated as needed. ...Read more

7 week old baby is often sleeping 4, sometimes 5 hours at night before waking. Should I wake him up after 3 hours to make sure he's feeding enough?

No: A normal, happy, growing 7-week-old baby follows the saying, "Never wake a sleeping baby." Normal babies at this age who happen to sleep through the night will just eat more during the daytime. 12 week old baby has started spitting up forcefully and not wanting to sleep, should I be worried, she did this one day a week ago as well?

Hard to know: A physician should at least know more about potential sick contacts, the infant's birth history, and more about her feeding history before advising. You could initiate a virtual consult or call your pediatrician for advice. If she is not having wet diapers, has fever, is grunting with breaths, wheezing, or drooling excessively then you might consider urgent care tonight. ...Read more
