Two Days Of Prednisone Does Not Cause High Blood Sugar
Non-fasting blood sugar was 162. Had been on prednisone. Could high blood sugar make someone feel tired a lot? Am not diabetic (yet?)
Prednisone is a synthetic cortisone. The body makes cortisone, a natural hormone made in adrenal glands. The body converts it to Hydrocortisone to become active. 25 mg of cortisone has about same effect as 5 mgm prednisone. The average person would produce 3-6 mg of pred daily. So why use a substitute? Not a diabetic, but blood sugar had been from 129 -218 since receiving double strength Decadron (dexamethasone) IM injection and 60mg Prednisone once daily for 2days.
I take prednisone 40mg daily for asthma flair up. I took my blood sugar 20-30 min after eating cookies and popcorn it was 208. Should I worry?

Don't forget to use exercise to lower blood sugar when your breathing is better. ...Read more

Occasionally, this may cause low serum potassium level which may lead to weakness and possibly even cardiac effect. However everyone is different and I am no longer surprised from paradoxical responses in some people. ...Read more

Maybe impaired: The effects of thyroid hormone on blood glucose is complex. Insulin levels may be increased, but there is also resistance to Insulin action. Often, fasting glucose is not affected, but glucose may increase more after a meal (i.e. Impaired glucose tolerance). All this should improve when the thyroid is treated, unless you are also developing diabetes. ...Read more

If blood sugar levels remain too high the body suppresses appetite over the short term. Long-term hyperglycemia causes many of the long-term health problems including heart disease, eye, kidney, and nerve damage. The most common cause of hyperglycemia is diabetes.
