Twisted Colon Symptoms
I have had severe abdominal pain from time to time over the last ten years. Doctors have always told me it’s IBS. Could it be a twisted colon?
No: The colon doesn't twist, it is held in place by a variety of fibrous anchors. The small intestine can, but twisting cuts off the blood supply to the intestinal tissue. If not tended to rather quickly, it dies & leaks your poop inside & you die. If you had short periods of sudden pain followed by recovery, it might be an intermittent twist, but those are indeed rare. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Some doctor told my brother: "one of the causes of the twisted colon can be, if a person was sexually abuse in his childhood. Is this true?
Referencing IBS: I am assuming that by "twisted colon" your brother's doctor was referring to colon spasms as an indicator of irritable bowel syndrome (ibs). In patients with ibs, a history of sexual, physical, or emotional abuse is reported more often than in those without ibs. Also, patients with ibs are more likely to report greater lifetime (childhood stress is particularly important) & daily stressful events. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

8yr old had appendix removed & had 2nd surgery for bowel obstr. & twisted colon. 2yrs later has stomach cramps, food coming up, burning, vomit help!
Time for a visit: I would take the kid to urgent care or the er now. With that history, the potential for certain parts of the intestines to stick to each other and possible bind or twist will remain a possibility. A review of the history, exam and possible xrays will be needed to exclude blockage from a simple stomach flu. ...Read more
Had a volvulus in colon and had more than 8inches removed in emer surg 2yrs ago continue to have pain and discomfort same area? Can it happen again? Am i more at risk b/c i already had this once?
Not likely: A volvulus occurs because of redundancy (extra length) of colon. The fact that this excess was excised will likely prevent occurrence. However, you could be having symptoms from adhesions (scar tissue) that can accompany open surgery. Check with your surgeon. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
