Depends on cause: For typical cold symptoms, liquefying congestion w/ saline nasal spray & drinking fluids can help; otc cough preps should suffice. For more severe cough, rx w/ Codeine may b needed. For chronic cough, stop smoking, see doc for possible COPD meds. For cough d/t reflux, try otc acid blocker or see doc. For deep, productive coughs, see doc: may need antibiotics & more. Best med is one that works. ...Read more
Treat your allergy: The dose of thyroid medication you are on does not limit medications for your nose. Start with irrigating your nose with saline. If your nose is acutely congested, you can use a nasal decongestant such as oxymetazloline (Afrin) for 3-4 days. You need to use a nasal steroid for the long haul. OTC Nasacort (triamcinolone) is available, all others are by prescription. Again, no nasal decongestant beyond 4-5 days. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Is there any medication i can take for sinus congestion that does not have a side effect of anxiety.
I have tried over-the-counter medications for sinus congestion yet nothing seems to work. Any ideas?
Sinus congestion: Try irrigating your nose with saline or hypertonic saline. Regular saline is a mixture or one teaspoon kosher salt to one quart of water, tap or boiled. It does not matter. For hypertonic and more congestion add 3 tsp salt to one quart of water. 50 cc each nostril 4 times a day. You can add some baking soda, a pitch, for better ph balance. Good luck. ...Read more

I am having a terrible cold and high fever and congestion in the chest..What medication should I take?
Hello, please advise which medications are best to relieve sinus congestion and post nasal drip? Thanks very much.
Is there anyway to relieve nasal congestion without the use of medication? It makes me too drowsy.
Diagnosis: Nasal congestion may be the result of allergic rhinitis, non-allergic rhinitis, overuse of over the counter sprays. It sounds like you are taking a sedating antihistamine. As always, diagnosis precedes treatment. See an ENT doctor for a proper diagnosis and treatment. In the meantime try saline (warm salt water) irrigations. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers

saline: Cold meds we use as adults or with older kids reduce drainage by using meds that dry ; thicken the drainage.Babies are dependent on narrow nasal passages that will block with thickened drainage. Your best rx for infants is to use generous amounts of saline nose wash and occasional suction to keep their nasal passages clear. Clean it as often as needed ; avoid all the stuff for old kids. ...Read more

What over-the-counter medication should I use for ear pain due to congestion (liguid in the ear)?
Nasal blockage: Try a nettie pot first. You are alreadt taking an otc antihistamine with decongestent. Avoid neosynephrine (phenylephrine) or afrin. They can cause rebound swelling, overusage and dependence. If it doesn't clear quickly seek medical treatment because this can lead to permenent problems including balance and loss of hearing. ...Read more
Just the opposite: Sinusitis or inflammation of the paranasal sinuses (there are 4 paired sinuses) does not cause nasal congestion. The opposite is true. That is, nasal congestion leads to sinus inflammation. It is true that they very often occur together, but the nasal congestion is the first event. Otc treatment may include saline (salt water) irrigations of the nose, a netti-pot and a decongestant. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers

What medication?: you haven't indicated what medications you are on, however that can still be a chest wall problem, (muscles, ribs, etc.) as for the congestion, if you are asthmatic, I would advise that you try your bronchodilator inhaler, and see if it helps, if no improvement or symptoms worsen, call or see your doctor, best wishes ...Read more
