I've been diagnosed with a large gallbladder sludge. What is cholecstomy?

Cholecystectomy?: The gallbladder stores bile, which helps digest fats. Sometimes the contents of the gallbladder become thickened and contain more than just bile, and this is referred to as sludge. Like gallstones, this thickened material can block the gallbladder's duct and cause pain or infection. Assuming you meant cholecystectomy, this is the medical word for surgical removal of the gallbladder. ...Read more

Can gallbladder sludge be removed laproscopically if the sludge is extremely large?

Yes...: Gallbladder sludge refers to a very thick viscous bile (e.g. Wet sand or mud consistency) that sits in the gallbladder. Does gallbladder sludge means gallbladder walls are thick?

Does gallbladder sludge means gallbladder walls are thick?

Nope: The gallbladder is a small hollow organ that holds bile. This helps us digest fat. When you look at the gallbladder with an ultrasound the bile can appear like sludge which probably just describes the consistency of the bile. Thickening of the gallbladder wall can be seen on the ultrasound as well and usually is a result of inflammation. These are two different findings. ...Read more

I have sludge in my gallbladder and have had recent pain there. Is there a downside to having it removed?

I have sludge in my gallbladder and have had recent pain there. Is there a downside to having it removed?

Always some risk: With any invasive procedure. Risks of removing a gb and stones/sludge are infection, bleeding, injury of nearby structures (liver, intestine, bile ducts). The risks without surgery would be worsening symptoms and risk of passing a small stone such as developing pancreatitis.
