Which test is best to monitor thyroid levels in thyroidectomy patients, just ft3 and ft4, TSH and ft4, or like i feel should be tsh, ft3 and ft4?

TSH: All you really need is a tsh. Assuming there is nothing wrong with your pituitary, this hormone responds in a very sensitive manner to the levels of your T4 and t3 (liothyronine). You are presumably taking levothyroxine as replacement. ...Read more

What should be my TSH level range with a total thyroidectomy for a goiter and pre cancerous cells? Thank you.

What should be my TSH level range with a total thyroidectomy for a goiter and pre cancerous cells? Thank you.

Precancerous?: Hi. Please give us the exact surgical pathology report wording. They don't read those as "precancerous". If it is not cancer, the TSH goal is to be normal. If it were cancer, your endocrinologist would have arranged for radioactive iodine therapy followed by some degree of TSH suppression (that goal is a moving target at this time). Good luck. ...Read more

I had a complete thyroidectomy 10 years ago. I just got a call from my PCP and my TSH level was 7.8. What does this mean?

I had a complete thyroidectomy 10 years ago. I just got a call from my PCP and my TSH level was 7.8. What does this mean?

Underactive: More information would be helpful, like why you had the thyroidectomy and what medicines you are on. But, the TSH of 7.8 is slightly elevated, which means your brain is trying to make your thyroid (which you don't have) work harder. The bottom line is this mean you are being slightly under-treated for your underachieve thyroid and likely need to be on a higher dose of levothyroxine. ...Read more

I was prescribed 125 mg levothyroxine by a ER dr. With a Tsh Level of 0.40 does that seem too high? (Total thyroidectomy w/parathyroid removal 11mos)

I was prescribed 125 mg levothyroxine by a ER dr. With a Tsh Level of 0.40 does that seem too high? (Total thyroidectomy w/parathyroid removal 11mos)

Get 2nd opinion: If the lab studies given are correct you should not need any supplemental thyroid therapy. If you have a low TSH it generally means that your thyroid is functioning at a high level. Factors to consider are why you had the thyroid removed, have you been on previous meds and has a T4, T3, (liothyronine) and Free Thyroxine been done. Have you been having any symptoms, if not, seek a second opinion before starting. ...Read more

Been having elevated BP since total thyroidectomy 3 weeks ago. Tsh was 17 and on Synthroid (thyroxine) 125. Will BP fluctuate until hormone levels stable?

Blood pressure: Problems are not caused by an underactive thyroid. Have your doctor look for other causes and treatments. Once the thyroid level is stable, make sure your doctor knows to keep it at a level appropriate for someone with thyroid cancer, not the usual normal range. ...Read more
