Try only on your side in a quiet dark room.

I: I can understand why this would be scary. You may try to think if there is something that had scared you recently, like a movie or something you heard on the news. Try to avoid your computer for an hour or two before bedtime, and limit any watching of the news to half an hour a day or less. I suffer from anxiety and when I try to fall asleep my left side of my body goes numb and my heart stops. Then my body jolts me awake.
You're OK.: Anxiety can make you imagine that the worst of the worst can, happen. Not true in reality. Your heart doesn't stop-- you would be dead. Your extreme anxiety is your real enemy. It is not uncommon to experience one's body jolting awake when overly tired or stressed. Many people do including me. Relax, you are ok. I'm experiencing muscle cramps in my legs every night when I try to fall asleep and a jittery restless feeling, I try and stretch but nothing helps.
Restless Legs: Some people experience Restless Legs Syndrome. It is an interesting but unpleasant clinical illness. Many things make it worse (alcohol, certain meds), some things seem to possible even cause it (low ferritin), and there are treatments available. Post psych meds im no longer able to sleep if I try to fall asleep I wake up right before and shake leg. Also feel breathless and grunt in pain &shock?
Problems: Did you taper off your medications or stop them cold turkey? Don't know which psychiatric medications you were on. But stopping some can lead to a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor discontinuation syndrome. The electric shocks can also occur w coming off of some ssri's.
