If you don't, you need an x-ray, so bring your ankle to either a podiatrist or an orthopedist, both of whom will have x-rays in their office (better than an er), so you can get diagnosed and treated properly. Shin splints: This could be shin splints if it is mostly in the front along the bone with small amount radiating into the muscle. If the majority of pain is in the muscle, this could be other things. A strain or injury could cause this. Any past injuries to that calf? Something more concerning could be compartment syndrome. Bruise: The tibia( shin) bone has very little muscle covering it . Contusion( bruises) here are very common in football and other sports. This is your likely diagnosis. Evaluation needed: The uncomfortable grinding and especially the locking may be signs of cartilage damage within the knee joint. Contusion: This sounds like a contusion/bruise. If just a bruise, you should recover within 1-2 weeks. Rest, ice and ibuprofen or naproxen can help reduce symptoms. Have it x-rayed: If you are getting constant pain that radiates, you should have it x-rayed, it could have a fracture or it could be ligamentous injury. You may need it immobilized for a short time to allow it to calm down then start range of motion exercises as soon as you can tolerate them .
