A Bruise: Wait a few days, the bruise might be on a deep layer next to the bone, and it takes a while for the blood to make it to the surface to see. The blood might show up not where it was stuck but lower due to gravity effects and it might not bruise at all, swelling alone can occur after blunt trauma. ...Read more

Over memorial day weekend, I tripped down a flight of stairs, and have had bruises on my shins now for over three months. Is the bone not healing? Can I get a cream to make them go away? They are extremely noticeable and ugly.

Three months later: These are probably not bruises, but rather post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. so I would start some OTC lighteners with hydroquinone and retinol or hydroxy acid. If not improving in a few months see dermatology for hydroxy acid peels or lasers to improve. ...Read more

My shin hit edge of stairs. I got wounded and the bone hurts a lot. How to cure it fast?

Depends: Shin trauma is a most painful injury. You have my sympathy. Time to healing depends on the severity of the damage, with fracture being the worst (approx 6-8 weeks) & bruise being least (approx 1-4 weeks). Time to pain relief requires close communication with your clinician if you are still having a lot of pain. Hope that helps. ...Read more

I fell down the stairs 3 months ago & my shin is still tender and bruised and bumpy. Why is it still like this?

Bone close to surfac: I'm assuming you bumped your shin on a stair edge during the fall. There was likely some deep bruising, possibly even a hematoma, kind of like a pool of blood deeper in the tissue than an ordinary bruise. Hematomas can take a long time to go away. There may also be inflammation which can take a long time to resolve. ...Read more

I fell down the stairs and now my left shin really hurts. Its elevated with ice and a large bruise is forming. I can walk/limp. What did I do to it?

Bad bone bruise: The shin normally has a thick layer of skin, then periosteum (thick bone cover), then bone. You gave it a hard knock, bled under the skin and got inflamed and lots pain. If u can walk, it is very unlikely u broke anything. So continue ice, elevate, switch to heat after 48 hours, mild analgesic as neede for pain. Oh, and why did u fall? Poor lighting? Don't let it happen again, you hear! ...Read more

I missed the last step on stairs and fell. I hit my shin on the pavement and its tender and swollen. What should I do?

Apply ice: If the injury occurred less than 24 hours ago then apply ice for 5 minutes 4 times daily for the first 48 hours. Ibuprofen otc can be used to relieve some of the pain and inflammation. Elevating the leg may help to reduce some of the swelling. You should see your pcp regarding the injury to make sure you have not sustained a fracture. ...Read more

Periosteitis: The shin is unusual in that it is a bone which is extremely close to the overlying skin, not padded by muscle or fat. Direct injury to the shin may produce inflammation of the outer lining of the bone called the periosteum. Less frequently, this could represent a stress fracture or hematoma. Rarely, an underlying tumor may be brought to light by a trivial injury in the same area ...Read more

It takes time: Amusing that you have not fractured or chipped your tibia or torn a muscle/tendon it can take several months for this to feel normal. You can use otc liniments and massage.
