Which tcas is more potent for sciatica pain relief, amitriptyline(or nortriptyline), imipramine(or desipramine)?

Which tcas is more potent for sciatica pain relief, amitriptyline(or nortriptyline), imipramine(or desipramine)?

TCA: Tca are classic for neuropathic pain - sciatica for example. Any of the ones u mentioned may be quite eefective - and cheap. They are not without side effects - dry mouth, constipation, sedation. Any of the ones u mentioned can be effective. I personally like amytryptilline - 10mg at night - as mentioned all will work. Additionally other meds such as lyrica, (pregabalin) neurontin, Cymbalta are options. ...Read more

I'm considering taking elavil or tofranil (imipramine) for depression. Which is best?

I'm considering taking elavil or tofranil (imipramine) for depression. Which is best?

They're very similar: Elavil (amitriptyline) (amitripyline) and tofranil (imipramine) are both tricyclic antidepressants, an older category. While they are effective against depression, both can cause antihistamine-like effects e.g., sedation, dry mouth, dry eyes, constipation, and temporary trouble focusing vision. Elavil (amitriptyline) does this a little more, so tofranil may be better unless elavil's extra sedation helps. ...Read more

Selective beta blockers instead of non selective for asthma patients? Or are both bad?

Selective beta blockers instead of non selective for asthma patients? Or are both bad?

Selective may be OK: Selective beta 1 blockers are are tolerated by most asthmatics at lower doses. Non-selective beta blockers are contra-indicated in asthmatics because they block the beta2 receptors in the airways, leasing to broncho-constriction. Even non-selective applied to the eyes (for glaucoma) can cause asthma attacks or poorer control. High doses of beta1 may rarely cause similar worsening of asthma. ...Read more

Is pamelor (nortriptyline) the safest trycyclic for cardiac patients?

Is pamelor (nortriptyline) the safest trycyclic for cardiac patients?

Others preferred: In gereneral tricyclic antidepressants including Pamelor (nortriptyline) are relatively less safe than other classes of antidepressants. This is especially true if "cardiac disease" means recent (within approximately 6 months) heart attack. Zoloft (sertraline, an ssri) may be relatively safer. Untreated depression contributes to worsened prognosis for certain types of heart disease. ...Read more

150 mg. Elavil (amitriptyline) for 25 years switch to ssri with greatest sedative affect as elavil (amitriptyline) - which ssri would be best suited for me?

150 mg. Elavil (amitriptyline) for 25 years switch to ssri with greatest sedative affect as elavil (amitriptyline) - which ssri would be best suited for me?

Individual consult: To find something best suited to you, you need an individual re-assessment with your own doctor. There's no ssri as truly sedating as elavil (amitriptyline). In fact, this is partially why many ssri's are chosen over older antidepressants like Elavil (amitriptyline) anyway. People don't like to be drowsy in daytime. If you and your doctor are looking for sedation, an alternative (not an ssri) might be mirtazepine. ...Read more

Are antidepressants potent antihistamines also?

Some are, yes.: Looking at receptor inhibition profiles (lab data) we can see that some do indeed block histamine receptors. Older ones in the tca class (elavil, anafranil, etc), trazodone and even a more modern one like Remeron (mirtazapine) do so which can lead to increased sleepiness and appetite. As far as potency, they're not as effective as sudafed in fighting a cold. ...Read more
