Does migraine affect the trigeminal nerve?

Does migraine affect the trigeminal nerve?

Migraines: The function of the trigeminal nerve should remain normal in patients with migraines ( good facial sensation and good masseter muscle strength). However, it is the trigeminal nerve the main neural structure implied in the mechanism of migraine. A cascade of neuro-inflammatory response on the trigeminal nerve is what ultimately mediates the pain in migraine sufferers. ...Read more

The exact biological differences are poorly defined. "Cortical spreading depression" is more typical of migraine. ...Read more

Can Maxalt (rizatriptan) work on the Trigeminal Nerve?

For migraine...: ...there are theories that the trigeminal nerve is involved. Maxalt (rizatriptan) works to decrease and stop abnormal firing and release of certain chemicals that cause the migraine pain. For the more typical trigeminal disease, trigeminal neuralgia, Maxalt (rizatriptan) does not have any effect because the mechanism of pain is different. Good question! ...Read more
