Selsun, Ketoconazole: (pityrosporum) malassezia ovale is a yeast 'which lives on the skin'. It is associated with: pityriasis versicolor, pityrosporum folliculitis, seborrhoeic dermatitis (dandruff!) and atopic dermatitis.Topical treatment with selenium disulfide or ketoconazole shampoos is effective and oral fluconazole, ketoconazole or itraconazole is also effective. I have read that pityrosporum folliculitis is a chronic disease. Does this mean that treatments will be for a lifetime also?
Ear infx 2+ mths. Got Ear Cx. Result is:malassezia furfur complex etiologic agent of pityriasis versicolor. On Treatment 11/2weeks. Ear still itchy?
Unlikely diagnosis: Yes, M. furfur is the causative agent of tinea versicolor, but it would be highly unusual to develop this condition resulting in an inner, middle, or external ear infection. What is more likely is incidental seborrheic dermatitis of the ear, for which M. furfur may play an additional pathogenic role. Read more

Have "pityrosporum ovale". Been treated with Ketoconazole+Nizoral shampoo, Sporanox (itraconazole) pills and topical Brentacort. Problem persist. What else can I do?
Simple....: Take 400mg of Nizoral (ketoconazole) and do activity to sweat profusely after the pill. Iron all your garments, linen, towel....whatever touches your skin. The animal and human companion have to be cleansed. May repeat Nizoral (ketoconazole) one more time. If very extensive and stubborn rash....check your immune system. Read more
10mth rash. 2derms, 10 diff meds that didn't help. I think Pityrosporum Folliculitis, fits all symptoms. Why will no one give me an antifungal?

Why is pityrosporum folliculitis very stubborn to treat? . I've been using Nizoral (ketoconazole) for months now and I still get pustules on my chest and back.

Can pityrosporum folliculitis be treated with a low dose of Accutane? I have tried antifungal pills. It made a big difference but still not cured.
Pityrosporum folliculitis: Treatment of pityrosporum folliculitis, must deal with both the yeast overgrowth and any predisposing factors, otherwise the condition will recur. Unfortunately we often either do not know, or cannot correct, all the factors that make one susceptible so the condition has a tendency to return once the anti-yeast treatment is stopped. Can Pityrosporum Folliculitis slightly mimic scabies? Where on body would it appear? Would antifungal soap clear it? How would one be tested for PF?
Not really: It is frequently misdiagnosed as acne. If you're using acne meds appropriately and things are not getting any better think maybe you have PF. Should be treated with anti fungal meds. Scabies most commonly appears at pressure points of clothes on skin- belt, wrists, and the webs of the fingers. Read more

Ketoconazole: A course of oral ketoconazole and topical ketoconazole shampoo is currently the recommended treatment. Oral medication should be discontinued when the lesions resolve. No, but...: I do not believe Nystatin works on pityrosporum, but ketoconazole and selenium sulfide do! . Try otc Nizoral ad shampoo or selsun blue shampoo and lather it up on the affected areas x 5 minutes daily and wash it off in the shower. Do this for 2 weeks and see if you had success! Read more
