Treatment Of Drop Attacks
I have Ménière's disease with frequent spinning vertigo. 4 days ago I started having daily drop attacks - crisis of tumarkin. Is it a sign of burnout?
No: Drop attacks can occur any time during the course of Ménières and often occur in a flurry of attacks over a short period of time. Avoiding salt, MSG, caffeine and nicotine may help. Some benefit from a diuretic. Diamox (acetazolamide) may help reduce fluid in the labyrinthine system. Vestibular rehabilitation therapy can minimize the long term consequences after the process resolves. Not all seizure medications are helpful with these types of seizures. Felbamate, valproate, and Lamotrigine have been used for drop attacks for a while. New studies show that topamax (topiramate) also works. Hope this helps! ...Read more

What is the cause?: Please see previous HT responses. A cause is found in 7/10 cases of West Syndrome, or Infantile Spasms, hypsarrhthymia on EEG & arrest of psychomotor development. Chromosomal Microarray detects most gene mutations that can cause it. Inborn errors of metabolism may require other tests. Prognosis is poor if development, neurological exam & MRI were abnormal at the time salaam seizures began. ...Read more
