Can the antibiotic bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) ds be used to treat strep throat? Will it cure strept.
Is it ok to have alcochol if I have chronic strep throat an not taking any antibiotic for the holidays?
Drinking: This is a very general response. First people should be a legal age to drink. If one had a chronic condition and was not symptomatic ; not having a fever , cough or active sore throat the occasional alcoholic beverage would not be of concern. Hi it been a week i been diagnose with strep throat still haven't gone away even with antibiotic should I worry?
Sore throat: First, who examined? Did anyone evaluate for a peritonsillar abscess? And did they do a monospot? Many 'strep throats' are actually mono, which while strep bacteria may be present in a culture, the strep isn't the cause of symptoms. If it's mono, an ebv panel might help, but the treatment is rest and no Aspirin if it is. ...Read more
Penicillin still #1: Despite being the oldest antibiotic, it is still the medicine of choice for treating strep throat infection. It is not 100%, but still the "standard of care." it is sometime not used because of penicillin allergies or because of younger age (adolescent/teen-more difficult with schedule--school/sports etc) due to required frequency of use --4x/day for 10 days..
