Out of the blue, my lips are so dry that they are swollen, peeling and red beyond the margins of my lips. I have tried every lip treatment.

Lip dryness & ec: Persistent dry lip may be lip eczema, which can be treated like skin eczema, using hydrocortisone cream plus Vaseline or Aquaphor to retain moisture. Sometimes, lipsticks or lip sunscreen chemicals are causing an allergic reaction on the lips. Other times, a person is a primary lip-licker (it's her habit). Once cracked, lips get irritated by routine foods and juices. A doctor can sort things out. ...Read more

My advice is for you, is to have a visit with your doctor if the problem is still present.
Best of luck. ...Read more

I have a red spot after having a cold sore on my lip. What is the best treatment to help the scar go away? Mederma?

Depends on where...: Hi there, to adequately answer your question I would need a couple more pieces of information. (1) where exactly is the red spot? By that I mean is it on the red smooth "inner" part of the lip or is it on skin on the "outer" part of the lip? (2) how long ago did the cold sore go away? Mederma can work if it is on the outside, but not inside the lip. ...Read more

Green head fly bite area is getting larger over the last 2 hours and is red hot and itchy. When should I be concerned and request treatment?

Warning signs would be feeling lightheaded, breathing problems, the development of hives, nausea/vomiting, rapid heart rate etc. Try some ice and maybe Benadryl (diphenhydramine) now ...Read more

A red-shouldered hawk has a nest in my front yard. Today it swooped by me. Its talons scratched my head. It bled a little. I've cleaned it with alcohol and used neosporin. Is that enough? I had a tetanus short four years ago.

A red-shouldered hawk has a nest in my front yard. Today it swooped by me. Its talons scratched my head. It bled a little. I've cleaned it with alcohol and used neosporin. Is that enough? I had a tetanus short four years ago.

I: I was fascinated by your question and so I took some time researching it. (i went to the military medical school where we studied things like this). It is probably better that this was a red-shouldered hawk rather than it's close relative the red tailed hawk. I am not an infectious disease specialist. So, you may need input from one (there is one infectious disease doctor that periodically answers question on avvo. Com). The red tailed hawk can carry sarcocystis which would normally only present a danger to humans if eating uncooked fowl. However there were some reports of infection by bite or scratch. Both the red - shouldered hawk and the red tailed hawk can carry west nile virus. The red shoulder hawk can carry toxoplasma gondii, which is normally only transmitted to humans via eating uncooked fowl. The birds feces can also contain the organisms. So, here is my concern, if the tallons are contaminated by feces- would a scratch be a easy vehicle for human infection.
So, the only thing I can tell you, is that your tetanus shot is up to date. You will need to get input from someone with more knowledge than I have, to see if you are at risk for any of the above mentioned infections. ...Read more
