Treatment For Positive Ppd Skin Test
Tuberculosis: Ppd (purified protein derivative) is a test for exposure to tuberculosis. If you have a postive test, you have been exposed and your body is making antibodies. If your exposure was through a vaccine (called bcg) treatment might not be necassary. More likely, a chest xray will be ordered. If that shows evidence of disease, then several drugs will be given over several months to cure it. ...Read more
Tb skin test negative, quentform TB test negative, bone marrow biopsy results indicative of TB (reacts to ziehl niehlssen), PCR negative. How come?
No...actually: The zn stain is a broad stain for acid fast bacilli of which mycobacterium tuberculosis is one of many. The specific tests like quantiferon or the pcr test are against you having tb. The culture is the "gold standard" but you will need to wait for it. It might turn out be a cousin of TB and that too will grow out of culture. Stay on TB meds until they are certain of the AFB positive organism. ...Read more
False positive for Lupus, now positive for HCV, waiting on blood test to confirm. Could HCV cause a false + for lupus?
Lupus biopsy: Biopsy of lupus has a number of features that lead to diagnosis: a thickened basement membrane, vacuolar alteration of basal keratinocytes and superficial and deep inflammatory infiltrate. Lupus has a number of different forms in the skin and there are times when it is not easy to differentiate it from other types of skin inflammation. There are other tests to support diagnosis. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Tested positive on the ELISA test for hsv2, a month later tested negative via western blot 2 years after possible exposure . Which test to believe?
Both!: ELISA is very sensitive and sometimes gives a false positive. Interfering substances in serum can make the test look positive. On the other hand, Western Blot is very specific. It does not light up unless you really have antibodies to HSV. So, both tests were "right" , but the Western blot indicates that you do not have the antibody to HSV and have not been exposed. ...Read more

Pcr blood test for hsv1 & hsv2 both negative 7 weeks post exposure. Is this a reliable test vs igg antibody testing?
Tuberculosis vaccinated, TB test positive...Will my ANA be positive because of TB test positive due to vaccine?
A bit too early: The exact time for reliable chlamydia testing by NAAT isn't certain, but 3 days probably is a bit early. A negative result would be somewhat reassuring, but probably not conclusive. It would be safer to wait until 5 days or so, unless there is some urgency (e.g. if you have abdominal pain or other symptoms of a complication like PID). ...Read more

Yes: There are 2 reasons for this kind of result: (1) a false positive, or (2) early infection before seroconversion. In someone at low risk for HIV without symptoms, another negative WB in 1 month means there's no infection. In someone at risk or with symptoms of acute infection, a viral load can be helpful. The new 4th generation antigen/antibody tests will eliminate this problem. ...Read more
Can RPR test for syphilis give false negative? If syphilis is highly suspected should I retest for it ?
Prozone effect: False (-) in RPR syphilis testing occurs when there is a prozone effect. Why? It's because the concentration of syphilis antibodies is so high, it interferes with the antigen-antibody interactions that result in a (+) reaction. A false (-) result can also occur during primary syphilis since not enough time has passed to allow high enough antibody levels for a (+) reaction to occur. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
