Doctor insights on:
If someone has had Rheumatic Fever in the past and they get Strep again, do they have a recurrence if they treat Strep within a week or so?
Strep: You could develop recurrent rheumatic fever from a strep infection, but prompt treatment is the best way to avoid it. If you have rheumatic heart disease or history of glomerulonephritis, taking permanent penicillin prophylaxis would be recommended although it's not as effective for prevention of glomerulonephritis. A specialist in infectious diseases could answer your question best, however.
If verified- treat: The majority of sore throats are viruses, but if you have verified strep you should have it treated with an antibiotic. Symptoms may improve in a day or two without treatment, but complications would still be possible without proper treatment.
Cipro (ciprofloxacin) for strep: It'll likely take care of the infection but it's not recommended as first or even second line use. There are reports of increasing resistance of group a strep to fluoroquinolones (cipro). Penicillin is still the first choice and macrolides for people with penicillin allergy (or cephalosporins depending on local resistance).See 2 more doctor answers
Antibiotics: Untreated strep throat can lead to serious complications. Complications can include infection of middle ear, sinuses, tonsils, skin & blood; scarlet fever, inflammation of the kidney (glomerulonephritis) & eventually rheumatic fever. Please see your physician for strep test/ culture. If strep +, you will need antibiotic treatment.
You can't: You can't gt rid of it in 2 days if it is indeed strep throat. Antibiotics help but they still take time. Usually takes 5-7 days on antibiotics.
Self treatment: First you have to have access to culture material to make the diagnosis. Second, you have to have access to antibiotics. Then again, you can use symptomatic care by gargling with any variety of substances, take either Ibuprofen or tylenol (acetaminophen) for pain and hope that you dont develop acute rheumatic fever, glomerulonephritis, or chorea in three to four weeks.
Playing the odds: You can always play the odds and see what happens.Like the folk in the early 1900s.They also had strep and it passes. However, about 1/200 developed 1of 3 patterns of complications. The brain thing, st vitas dance put some in mental hospitals. The kidney thing led to sudden kidney failure that some did not survive. The heart thing ate up valves and left many weak for the remainder of a short life.See 1 more doctor answer
Pretty standard rx: Strep is well known to be susceptible to the penicillin family of drugs. This is a common and effective adult dosing.
Strep Throat: You are contagious for at least 24 hours after starting antibiotics for strep throat. Symptoms usually begin improving around that time.
How long after i start taking clindamycin 300mg to treat strep throat will i start feeling better?
