Please tell me what causes colics in babies, and is it hereditary?

We don't know: Colic is not hereditary...But it can be seen in families. My understanding is that it deals with the immaturity of the digestive system and therefore inability to digest well. Probiotics can help immensely as can gripe water or colic calm or cocyntal. So can craniosacral therapy and or chiropractic. Chinese medicine and homeopathy also work. I have had success with all of them! ...Read more

How much camomile tea is safe for an infant with colic?

I never advise it: A light brew of chamomile tea may give you something to do but I can remember no research data showing predictable benefit. Teas have been offered for colic since the first written treatment books for kids in the 1700's & follow the assumption that the gut is somehow upset. Present thought finds it more a transient behavior/frustration issue. ...Read more

Is it high needs infant or colic? Fussy all day n night and never seems satisfied. Not eating normal and just flat out miserable. Help, please!

Fussy baby: A pediatrician's evaluation and input are necessary. It could be formula-related, food- and medicine-related if breastfeeding, lactose intolerance if gassy and spitting up, acid reflux if regurgitating or vomiting to name a few. Tense moms tend to get colicky infants - try being calm. Take a break - have a close relative or a close friend take over for minutes or hours to rest &catch up on sleep. ...Read more

My 7 weeks daughter have very bad colic one of my friend told me about infant belly binder. I have never heard about this before. Is it good for bubs?

College Fund: Save the money for your college fund! There is no evidence to suggest that these things work to improve colicky behavior. Anecdotally, I have found success holding colicky babies with their tummies down and palm across the belly, putting gentle pressure on it, at a 45 degree angle. Rocking helps. Unfortunately, there is no substitute for the human touch to help colicky babies get through this. ...Read more

Does using gripe water along with dentinox colic drops for babies have side effects? Sedative? Harmful?

Does using gripe water along with dentinox colic drops for babies have side effects? Sedative? Harmful?

Usually ok: Doctors usually don't give babies any medications, even over-the-counter items, unless there's good benefit. A mom can bring the items to the doctor to check the ingredients, but a little bit of a trusted brand of gas drops and gripe water drops are ok to try. They may or may not help any colicky symptoms. If they don't seem to help, then they shouldn't be used. ...Read more

What are some tips for traveling with a baby who has colic?

What are some tips for traveling with a baby who has colic?

Colic and travel: This has multiple answers depending on age of baby, mode of travel, and distance you are traveling. Most colicky babies love the hum and vibrations of car travel so if your distance is not great this may be best. It also allows you to sop and destress when you need to. If by air, then try and travel at the baby's best time of day and get nonstop flights if possible. ...Read more

What is life like with a colic baby?

Stressful: This is a very stressful time for your family. Colicky babies demand constant attention. You are sleep deprived already, then on top of that, you have the constant needs of this child. Walking in a sling is super helpful. Consider "baby wearing" as much as possible, not just you but dad and other family members. Never shake the baby, you can always set her down and let her cry, take a break! ...Read more

Crying unconsolably: A common definition of colic is an infant who cries for more than 3 hours a day, 3 days of the week, for more than 3 weeks. Although no one knows for sure what causes it, colic is fairly common, starting a few weeks after birth. Luckily, this condition goes away by about the third month of life. Many things: Try gas drops, they help sometimes. Swaddling can be helpful. Sometimes white noise (clothes drier, vaccuum cleaner, heart sounds etc.) helps. Sometimes a car ride does the trick. I've had good success with homeopathic colic remedies, and with camomille and fennel teas. Colic has different causes in different babies, and you may have to try a few things. ...Read more
