Training Youth For The 400 Meters Run
Is it possible to win at the olympics at long distance running by starting training at the age of 19 years? I have an ectomorph body type.
Yes!: But possible & probable are two different things, not to dash your hopes. Perhaps, rather than focus on winning at the olympics, you can set a goal of personal achievement, say participating in a 1 mile event, then walking a 5k before running a 10k and then moving towards half-marathon & full marathon. Some folks like ultra-marathons. You're a winner just by trying. As nike logo says, just do it! ...Read more
Does the sodium loss in endurance athletes go down the more years they participate in training and racing?
I'm a competitive swimmer aiming for the 2016 Rio Olympics. What are some medication/supplements to enhance endurance and testosterone? I train 10x/wk
Natural supplements: are the best way to attempt boosting your testosterone. Medications have side effects and are illegal for the Olympics! Zinc supplementation has been shown to be of some benefit in optimizing testosterone levels Vitamin D and whey protein may also be of some benefit. The most important thing to do is train and eat right. Best of luck! :) ...Read more

I run cross country and track distance. Above my age level. I run a lot. Is a doctor on here suggested to look up patella femoral syndrome. Relation?
Runner's Knee: Runnerboy, i hope this helps...As a sports specialist, patellofemoral synd in some form is probably the most common knee problem i see in young athletes, especially runners. Typically it's felt behind the kneecap and is a stabbing pain. A good start would be getting on an icing program, 20 minutes 4-5 xs a day religiously. If it limits sports or there is swelling, see a sports specialist. ...Read more

48 yrs old. Max heart rate on slow (65 mins) 5 mile run =230. Average HR =182. Training watch says 0% of run is at appropriate rate for my age. OK?
How do you feel?: There is no rule that says it can't go that fast, but it's more than expected. It's possible your monitor is "double counting" the beats, which is not uncommon because it misinterprets the electrical impulse of your heart. Do you have a fast heart rate at rest? Do you have palpitations, shortness of breath, dizziness, passing out or chest pain? If you have those, see your doc to check rhythm. ...Read more
Marathon Training: If you are between seasons, you should only run 3 days per week. Make the two shorter runs during the week and a longer run on the weekend. Make the shorter runs total to the distance run in the longer run. For Example, if your long run is 12 miles on Saturday, make the two shorter runs equal to 12 miles. Try to build up the long runs up to one 20 miler, increasing 2 miles per week. Dr Rich Blake ...Read more

I read that occup. Therapists in Canada can now perform psychotherapy w/ additional training. Is this a new trend for the field?
The lines between: clinical psychotherapy & other forms of therapy are somewhat blurred these days. It is unfortunate, since many people think they R in therapy when they R being seen by coaches or counselors with very limited training. If U need psychotherapy, I would recommend starting w' trained psychologists, psychiatrists or social workers. If therapy with an occupational therapist is needed, they will refer U ...Read more
I'm about to start training for my first marathon. I've done 3 half-marathons so far. How should I approach nutrition alongside my running training?
High protein diet: Muscle stress will be severe. Will need to enhance your protein intake. Need good intake of salt and minerals (leafy green vegetable, dried fruits, fruit/vegetable juices) with carbohydrate loading starting 2-3 d prior to a race. Carbohydrate loading for training and during runs can be very helpful. As a woman be careful of just water loading. Recommend use of gatorade-type fluids, high salt diet. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
Saw paralyzed man walking with artificial skeleton at berkeley graduation. Will that help more people?
Yes: Until we find a cure for paralysis which still seems to be a long way off, these "exoskeletons" will become more and more available for less cost and more widespread use. As a rehab doctor., I am really looking forward to the day when we can prescribe these devices more extensively. I think they will change lives for the better. ...Read more
M south indian. If someone was performing well in studies at schools, colleges, 90% chance he/she will perform well in all intelligent tests to get jobs?
The question is too : Broad. There are multiple types of intelligence, at least seven. If you are taking a job test is related to your college studies and you have done well on your college studies and there is no reason to doubt that you should do well on your job tasks. However, if the job tests required you to perform an area of intelligence that is less strong for you, then there is no guarantee. I will give you an example. Let's say that you did very good in college but you took a job test to be a musician, and music is something that you do not do well in, then i wouldn't expect you to do well on the test.Chances are however if you would do quite well. Google types of intelligence and see the wikipedia article on it. It will explain this concept to you quite well. Best wishes in your studies and in your job search. It sounds like you really don't have anything to worry about. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
