If you are told your cancer free and have taken chemo pills why would you need radiation ?

If you are told your cancer free and have taken chemo pills why would you need radiation
?

Past experience: "cancer-free" is a poor choice of words when you are still receiving therapy. We never know when the last cancer cell is gone. A better term would be "no evidence of cancer". With many cancers, we know from experience that without radiation the risk of cancer returning is higher, even when there is no evidence of cancer after chemo. Hence the recommendation for radiation. ...Read more

Could cancer patients receiving chemo drink milk? Or lactose free milk or none of the dairy milk product

Could cancer patients receiving chemo drink milk? Or lactose free milk or none of the dairy milk product

No such restrictions: Dairy products are not harmful to patients with Cancer unless they are overweight, in which case we try to minimize dairy product use in order to lose weight. Over-weight is not good for anyone including patients with cancer. As such patients with Cancer are allowed to drink milk, especially reduced fat type of milk is good for their nutrition. ...Read more

I have an ovarian cancer, was on chemo for 4 months, now am cancer free but now my left hip is in much pain (had both hip replacements few years ago).?

Check it: I agree with dr. T. Hopefully your pain is due to arthritis or other bone-joint issues but pain in a cancer patient (particularly if always on the same spot or if worsens with time) should be properly evaluated to rule out metastases. ...Read more

Are there drs. Who work on cancer patients for free? After chemo/rad destroyed my gums my teeth began chipping. I can't afford trtmnt./pymnts

Probably: In a city the size of richmond, va there should be resources to assist you in getting the treatment you need either free or at greatly reduced prices. Start with your local health department since some have dental clinics there. Also, your oncologist may be aware of dentists or dental clinics where services are provided on a "sliding scale" based on ability to pay. ...Read more

My mom had colon cancer nearly 12 years ago.Has been cancer free since surgery and chemo. CEA is now 3.7., highest it's been since then.Is this bad?

Not necessarily: when the colon cancer comes back , it usually comes back within the first 5 years from the diagnosis. it is unlikely that the colon cancer comes back after 12 years. in addition, CEA is not very sensitive nor specific for colon cancer. other things like cigarette smoking, other liver problems etc can increase CEA.if she smokes, makes sure to encourage her to quit. she need to follow up with her MD ...Read more

After chemo and/or radiation a person with cancer will never know if he/she is cancer free since ct's/pet scans will not show just a few cells?

After chemo and/or radiation a person with cancer will never know if he/she is cancer free since ct's/pet scans will not show just a few cells?

That is correct: The limitation of our technology is down to about 1 mm. sized lesions when applying MRI technology. CT technology can see only down to about 1 cm. in diameter of a lesioned area. The problem is that it only really takes 1 viable and HEALTHY CANCER CELL to get the whole process of recrudescence started again. Therefore, being "CANCER FREE", is something that can be said but never proven. ...Read more
