Docs are switching me from toprol (metoprolol) XL 12.5 to propranolol ER 60mgs and I'm worried my BP and pulse will drop to low? Mission is to help w anxiety.

Probably Fine: If you are basically healthy (no heart or lung problems) this should be fine, however I am a bit curious about the choice of treatment. Have you had a diagnostic evaluation of your anxiety? Beta blockers help with the physical symptoms of anxiety but may not help the cognitive (worried thoughts) symptoms. ...Read more

Unlikely: That a second 5 mgm will harm you however if you experience any dizziness get checked! A home blood pressure kit would be very useful (for a # of reasons) If you do not have one...get one...that way a situation like this can be easily "handled" at home....remotely (via Health Tap Prime for example....

I take metoprolol 25 MG for anxiety. Dr. says propranolol may be more affective. What is the difference?

I take metoprolol 25 MG for anxiety. Dr. says propranolol may be more affective. What is the difference?

Propranolol: The effectiveness of a beta blocking drug for helping anxiety is related to its ability to cross the blood-brain barrier which, in turn, is related to it's lipophilic vs hydrophilic properties. Both drugs cross, but propranolol does it better, so may be more effective in some people. ...Read more

Is it true that metoprolol is less likely to cause problems in asthmatics than propranolol?

Yes: Metoprolol is more cardio-selective (works more selectively on the heart) when Propranolol is not selective. One study showed that patients on cardio-selecive beta block had a mild reduction in lung function (fev-1) of around 7% but responded to bronchodilator better. ...Read more

Lopressor (metoprolol tartrate) 25 mg made me feel bad. Propranolol made me feel fine but I need a selective beta blocker. Which should I try?

Atenolol: Try atenolol - 12.5 to 100 mg (25 to 50 mg are the most usual doses). Atenolol is a beta 1 specific beta blocker that has the least ability to cross the blood brain barrier of all available beta blockers. It has no intrinsic sympathomimetic activity. It is intrinsically long acting and generally is given as a once a day dose. It's also dirt cheap! ...Read more

Propranolol 60 mg ER vs toprol (metoprolol) 25 mg er. Which lowers blood pressure most?

Ford v Chevy v Dodge: This is a question best addressed w/your doctor. Both are good blood pressure lowering medications that also keep your heart from beating too fast (beta blocker class). Toprol (metoprolol) has more studies recently regarding benefit in heart failure. Of course, cost can play into decision, too, although both are available as generics for $4/mo (http://i.Walmartimages. Com/i/if/hmp/fusion/customer_list. Pdf). ...Read more

What would you recommend as best beta blocker with least side effects to treat my SVT? Propranolol & metoprolol made me too dizzy.

What would you recommend as best beta blocker with least side effects to treat my SVT? Propranolol & metoprolol made me too dizzy.

Dose dependent: It's not so much the med as the dose - since the side effect of all BBs is to lower BP. If your BP becomes too low, you'll get dizzy. That said, the BB I like the best for SVT is nadolol. The usual dose is 20-80 mg once a day, but for you, I'd recommend starting at 10 mg once a day and if you tolerate it, think about increasing the dose. ...Read more

Propranolol safety in 18y/o male with tachycardia & high bld. Press? Life expectancy decreased? Side effects? Toprol (metoprolol) vs propranolol?

This is so common: That I despair of accurate diagnosis. Your heart and BP at 18 are controlled by the limbic system of the brain---a computer that organizes your ability to adapt to environment. Defective oxidative metabolism causes the computer to send out unnecessary signals through the sympathetic nervous system. Commonest cause is vitamin b1 and magnesium deficiency from ingestion of sugar and sweeteners. ...Read more

Lightheaded from propranolol & lopressor (metoprolol tartrate). Taking only propranolol for Wolff Parkinson white syndrome. Doc said I still must take it. What should I do?

Need assessment: The class of med you're taking are beta-blockers which may be very useful for WPW. But your symptoms need to be sorted out since the adverse effects of these drugs can cause your symptoms, either by excessively lowering your BP and/or heart rate. Alternate doses or beta-blockers, or even a different class of anti-arrhythmic agent may be considered. An electro-physiologic study may be useful too ...Read more

Inderal (propranolol) could be contributing to confusion in my 88 yr old mother. Is there a water-based beta blocker less apt to do so? Not metoprolol or atenolol..

Inderal (propranolol) could be contributing to confusion in my 88 yr old mother. Is there a water-based beta blocker less apt to do so? Not metoprolol or atenolol..

Atenolol: Atenolol is the most hydrophilic (least lipophilic) of the betablockers, crossing the blood brain barrier less than any other. If your grandmother can't tolerate atenolol, then she can't be on any beta blocker at all. Here is one of many articles on the subject: http://www. Ncbi. Nlm. Nih. Gov/pubmed/2865153. ...Read more
