I've had tooth pain on the tooth I had a root canal on 5 years ago when chewing. Sometimes unbearable. Could it have something to do with infection?

RCT: Sensitivity to heat is especially a classic sign of nerve involvement and the need for root canal therapy. Pain on biting pressure can be merely the bite being high and the need to adjust the bite. However, both symptoms combined along with the course of events that you describe would make the need for rct very likely. I think 3 weeks is long enough to wait for resolution. Probably: Radiographs are not a crystal ball... they don't disclose everything. Did your dentist check to see if the tooth was vital (alive)? Swelling may be from a periodontal issue, so yes, in that case root canal may not be needed. More info necessary to make a proper diagnosis. Long time: 5 days is a long time to be in pain. Need to have ears, nose, and throat checked by your md/do as well as revisiting the dentist.
