Maybe never, but...: Tooth abscesses originate from dead/diseased tissue within the bad tooth, which leads to an infection in the surrounding supporting bone (abscess). Antibiotics may temporarily reduce the abscess (usually takes no less than 48 hrs, but maybe longer), but never truly address the cause. For this you need a root canal or extraction. Some infections will not respond to antibiotics at all. ...Read more

Can earaches be a symptom of infected gums or a tooth abscess?

Can earaches be a symptom of infected gums or a tooth abscess?

Yes: Due to the proximity of the ear to the mouth, and the distribution of nerves in the area, dental problems can often cause pain to radiate to the ears. I was diagnosed with a double tooth abscess about one month ago. Swelling went down and pain went away after antibiotics. Now I have got pain in face, eye, neck and severe pain in jaw. What should I do?

Recurrent abscess: See your dentist to drain the dental abscess. If not treated, a serious dental abscess can eventually kill. The infection may spread to your jaw, cheeks, sinus and to other areas of your head and neck. The antibiotics (Penicillin is the most common) will give you only a temporary relief. See any dentist for examination, x-rays and treatment.
