Tonsillitis Tongue Ulcers
On penicillin for tonsillitis since yesterday, still really strong pain. Now have ulcers on back and sides of tongue?
Virus not strep?: The ulcers suggest you might not have strep throat, the main kind of pharyngitis or tonsillitis that responds to penicillin. Ulcers suggest a viral infection, like herpangina, coxsackie virus, and others. A new infection with oral herpes also could do it. Return to your doctor ASAP for additional exam, testing, and perhaps treatment with an anti-herpes drug like valacyclovir. Good luck! ...Read more

On penicillin for tonsillitis since yesterday, pain still really strong. Developed ulcers on sides n back of tongue, any advice pls?
Probably not tonsils: I think it's more likely there's one unifying disease process here-and with tongue ulcers, I would strongly recommend going back to the doctor. I would say you needed a biopsy for a full evaluation of what you have. Things may have started out with a case of 'tonsillitis' but it was probably this primary disease. Not sure if there's any history in the family of lupus or other rheumatologic disease ...Read more

Hello. I have 3 ulcers in my mouth. I have I think 3 little "spots" at the end of my throat. Can tonsillitis cause mouth ulcers? Is it tonsillitis?
Lesions: Tonsillitis causes inflammation of the tonsils. They may become red & swollen. Ulcerations might be associated with tonsillitis but 3 small ulcers is not diagnostic of tonsillitis its self. Can’t diagnose with available information. Examination, history & possibly other testing would be needed to make an accurate diagnosis. Treatment would be dictated by diagnosis. ...Read more

Virus? Herpes?: If new in past few days, probably a virus, expecially herpes if maybe exposed (kissing, performing oral sex). Other viruses also can do this, and some non-infectious diseases. Get care ASAP, including ER or urgent care if necessary (don't wait til Monday). If herpes, the sooner the better for accurate diagnosis and effective treatment. If this is longstanding, contact the doctor treating you. ...Read more

Sometimes, there can be a chronic low-grade infection within the tonsils that never fully resolves. This can lead to the chronic swelling and irritation of your tonsils. The lymph nodes drain the tonsillar area and are reacting to the chronic infection. You should see an ENT doctor and discuss tonsillectomy. ...Read more
