Is it possible for strep or tonsillitis to still get worse the first day after starting antibiotics?

Possibly: Bacterial infections can worsen, even if beginning antibiotics. Sometime patients feel worse in 24 or so hours due to substances released into the body from the death of the bacteria and cell death. Antibiotics do not guarantee cure. If one is worsening after beginning antibiotics and there is concern, a phone call to the doctor may be warranted or a re-visit. Give it a chance then call. ...Read more

I've had a really bad cough for 3+ weeks now then couldn't swallow went to docs diagnosed tonsillitis they gave me penicillin but now its worse.?

Alot worse?: If worse it needs to be checked. If you develop trouble swallowing to the point of drooling, painful opening of mouth, tender lymph node in neck opposite tonsil, you could have a peritonsillar abscess. If it's the cough that's worse, so long as you're not coughing up green or yellow, it's likely viral and will pass. If coughing until vomiting, may have pertussis, and need different antibiotic. ...Read more

Can I still get tonsillitis without tonsils. I got my tonsils out when I was 7 and since than my sore throats are worse or they feel like that?

No and Yes...: Once you have a tonsillectomy, you can't get tonsillitis anymore. Unfortunately, there are other structures in the throat that can give you a 'sore throat', including the adenoid and the lingual (tongue) tonsils. That surgery is intended to reduce throat infection frequency and intensity but, won't stop viruses or these other factors. Check with your doctor for tips to reduce your burden. ...Read more

Treated for tonsillitis but whole throat/tonsils swollen & red. Glands in neck swollen too after 20 days. Should it get worse to get better?

Culture: If the tonsils are red and swollen for 20 days and an antibiotic has been unsuccessful I would strongly recommend a culture of the throat to rule out a viral infection or a specific bacterial infection. Finally, infectious mono needs to be ruled out. No it should not get worse before it gets better. You need a specific diagnosis. See an ENT doctor. ...Read more

Had tonsillitis week & on erythromycin. Getting rapidly worse -green spots covering tonsils, blood phlem, chills/fever, ear pain. Is this normal?

Maybe not: For bacterial throat infection that will respond to antibiotic, would expect some improvement within 3-4 days. If taking an antibiotic for a week without improvement, and an infection is present, then the infection is either due to something other than bacteria or due to a strain resistant to the antibiotic used. Tonsillitis: Infectious mononucleosis is a cause of prolonged tonsillitis and fatigue. The tonsils may remain swollen after the infection has resolved. If an Otolaryngologist finds no active inflammatory process in your throat, chronic anxiety and stress may be the cause of a sensation of a lump in the throat. Postinfection fatigue may last weeks. If your blood work has normalized I expect improvement soon. ...Read more
